Topic: The Dear Hunter Posted: February 16 2008 at 21:19 |
I see much hype about The Mars Volta but not enough about these guys. I'm giving these guys a listen for the first time and I'm blown away by how diverse the music is compared to TMV. Is it just me or are The Dear Hunters not getting enough attention? Or have I not listened to The Mars Volta enough?

I have listened to TMV but haven't heard The Dear Hunter. Maybe I will check it out.

I agree, it's just that I have never seen TDH mentioned once in the forums for as long as I have been here. I don't know if the word is not getting out about these guys, even though they're the number #1 choice on the 2007 list , but I am just sorry I haven't found these guys earlier.

I think when Pat (Equality 7-2521) logs on he's gonna cyber kiss you, SpaceMonkey. He's the one that brought the band to PA's attention and picked Act II as his album of the year, I believe. I really need to sit down and listen to the first two acts. I've had em for a month.

Looking forward to it. They're definitely a worthy listen, I'm making my way through Act II right now.

Indeed a band that needs more attention here. I believe several other members have mentioned them here (including myself) but they deserve more attention; their 2007 release is a very good one.

The Dear Hunter were inducted into PA thanks to the combined efforts of the Xover team and myself, after Pat sent us the suggestion. It took some time, but now they've been here for several months. I picked up their album in a small music store in Georgetown, DC, and I was rather impressed by it (though I should listen to it a bit more often). However, I have to say I don't hear any real similarities with TMV - a band I know very well. I think TDH are much more melodic that the 'Puerto Rican terrorists' (a definition Micky loved ), and therefore more accessible.

Wow, so it took some real effort to get TDH into the Archives? And look where they stand now on the 2007 best albums' list. Pretty ironic.

I didn't say it took effort, it just took time ... We are all unpaid volunteers, and working in a genre team sometimes means being flooded with suggestions at a moment when real life reclaims its rights. The band were approved almost immediately after being suggested, but they had to wait for a few weeks until someone got down to actually add them. Unfortunately it happens when team members are busy with other things.

I've been singing the praises of The Dear Hunter for a while. I did notice the occasional similarity to TMV but perhaps we're making too much of it now. They are more melodic and less crazy than TMV. Both their CDs are great and worth checking out, but not just for TMV fans.

TDH kind of seem like....Sonic Youth meets Melt Banana. I mean they're ok, but I wouldn't go out and sing their praises like I would TMV.

It's all in the individual's preference. Sonic Youth, the name sounds familiar, and I never heard of Melt Banana. Are they a worthy purchase for someone psyched about TDH for the moment?

I can't say that I find any similarities between The Dear Hunter and Melt-Banana. They're spastic and noisy but still pretty good. Getting back on topic, The Dear Hunter is pretty good.

I have been meaning to check out TDH, but if they are anything like Melt Banana, there is no way I am going to touch them. Melt Banana is just pure noise.

This sounds interesting. Can anyone give me a short description of their music?
