I see much hype about The Mars Volta but not enough about these guys. I'm giving these guys a listen for the first time and I'm blown away by how diverse the music is compared to TMV. Is it just me or are The Dear Hunters not getting enough attention? Or have I not listened to The Mars Volta enough?

I have listened to TMV but haven't heard The Dear Hunter. Maybe I will check it out.

I agree, it's just that I have never seen TDH mentioned once in the forums for as long as I have been here. I don't know if the word is not getting out about these guys, even though they're the number #1 choice on the 2007 list , but I am just sorry I haven't found these guys earlier.

I think when Pat (Equality 7-2521) logs on he's gonna cyber kiss you, SpaceMonkey. He's the one that brought the band to PA's attention and picked Act II as his album of the year, I believe. I really need to sit down and listen to the first two acts. I've had em for a month.

Looking forward to it. They're definitely a worthy listen, I'm making my way through Act II right now.

Indeed a band that needs more attention here. I believe several other members have mentioned them here (including myself) but they deserve more attention; their 2007 release is a very good one.

The Dear Hunter were inducted into PA thanks to the combined efforts of the Xover team and myself, after Pat sent us the suggestion. It took some time, but now they've been here for several months.
I picked up their album in a small music store in Georgetown, DC, and I was rather impressed by it (though I should listen to it a bit more often). However, I have to say I don't hear any real similarities with TMV - a band I know very well. I think TDH are much more melodic that the 'Puerto Rican terrorists' (a definition Micky loved ), and therefore more accessible.

Wow, so it took some real effort to get TDH into the Archives? And look where they stand now on the 2007 best albums' list. Pretty ironic.

I didn't say it took effort, it just took time... We are all unpaid volunteers, and working in a genre team sometimes means being flooded with suggestions at a moment when real life reclaims its rights. The band were approved almost immediately after being suggested, but they had to wait for a few weeks until someone got down to actually add them. Unfortunately it happens when team members are busy with other things.

I've been singing the praises of The Dear Hunter for a while. I did notice the occasional similarity to TMV but perhaps we're making too much of it now. They are more melodic and less crazy than TMV. Both their CDs are great and worth checking out, but not just for TMV fans.

TDH kind of seem like....Sonic Youth meets Melt Banana. I mean they're ok, but I wouldn't go out and sing their praises like I would TMV.

It's all in the individual's preference. Sonic Youth, the name sounds familiar, and I never heard of Melt Banana. Are they a worthy purchase for someone psyched about TDH for the moment?

I can't say that I find any similarities between The Dear Hunter and Melt-Banana. They're spastic and noisy but still pretty good.
Getting back on topic, The Dear Hunter is pretty good.

I have been meaning to check out TDH, but if they are anything like Melt Banana, there is no way I am going to touch them. Melt Banana is just pure noise.

they're pretty good but the vocals border on annoying I'd appreciate it if he sang the high notes rather than yelled them

I have heard both of their albums several times, and while I do enjoy them (both 4 star quality in my book) I do not quite exactly understand the amount of hype I've been hearing over them (not on this site exactly, but in general; a friend of mine).
The music is rather consistently great, but the vocals go back and forth for me; at times I think his vocals are very suitable and tasteful, at other times I find myself with a bitter taste over them--they seem too formulaic at times...like I'm not sure I can describe it--and the music itself evokes too many images of common pop music at times for me to really immerse myself in it.
That's not really me ratting on the music per se, considering I do enjoy it and I am looking forward to other releases; I just can't really get around the vocalist being called "awesome" and "perfect"...he's got a good voice, but his voice also cracks at times which I don't mind--or I wouldn't if this were recognized.
I dunno, it's a split bag. Part of me loves this band, and another part is second-guessing myself. And it's not like the music is complicated (another thing I don't really understand people saying)...there are a solid number of layers to each song, but I've already unraveled most of the songs and I've had the albums for about two weeks. I'm just not so sure how I feel.
Like I said, if I were reviewing either of their albums, it'd be four stars easy--because the music, while simple mostly, is earnest and well-performed as well as interesting--and I have nothing AT ALL against poppier eccentricities , it just wasn't exactly what I was expecting when I read things about this band's complexity. So I mean...it'd be an easy 4 stars for either album...but with reservations.
Maybe they'll grow on me...that tends to happen frequently with me (Ulver's "Blood Inside" was my least favorite album of theirs for a long while...as of late, it is my undisputed favorite...so you know how these things go...it's a long back-and-forward rollarcoaster)
Anyway, that's my take after two weeks with each album...sorry it became so lengthy.

I'm listening to their first "album"-Act I... Interesting, something new... I like songs City Escape and The Inquiry of Ms. Terry... Not bad at all (considering that I prefer a little bit older sound)...

Not too impressed with them, but I must say that I like Act I about 10x more than Act II. The whiney, screechy vocals are a huge turn-off...

they are good but the remind me too much of Portugal. The Man.....just not as good. dont get me wrong I think the Dear Hunter is good just a tad overrated. Might want to check out portugal the man if you like them

I have to say I haven't noticed any "whiney screechy" vocals so far!

^ Give me a band that "whines" and "screeches" and we'll either agree with you or not. I'm not too sure what you mean by "whining" and "screeching".

Hmm. I see the Portugal comparison. I like them both about equally though:
Dear Hunter has more "progressive" music generally (though Portugal is very relaxed and more focused); Portugal have far superior vocals and some very decent compositions, although most of their newest album was kind of disappointing in my opinion.
Definitely anyone interested should check out both "Waiter. You Vultures!" (their debut) and "It's Complicated Being a Wizard" (an awesome, mostly-electronic EP).

PTM remind me more of The Mars Volta than The Dear Hunter but I can sort of see your point. They're a good band, in case you're wondering.

Imagine the singer from Fall Out Boy and the music from Panic at the disco with some Muse keyboards... but believe it or not it does not sound! It´s actually pretty good!

They aren't like Melt Banana. I had Deerhunter mixed up with Deerhoof.
