I'm listening to their EP right now, and I must say, I'm very impressed. The only problem is, is that their a little too straight forward t incorporate a GY!BE string section into every song.

A little too straightforward?
Do you mean less straightforward, or too straightforward?

They're one of the few dynamic Post-Rock bands. They do have a strong math rock influence that's neatly hidden beneath their wonderful orchestral sound, but it's a bit more dominant in their debut, "For A New Grammar Of Feelings".  Thumbs%20Up

BTW, both of their albums are studio albums although a bit too short for today's standards.

They're much more post-rock than math rock, but they do have some density in their music and interesting time sigs that can be found in math rock group.

Aside from that you NEED to try this. Math Rock or not. Wink

They're too straightforward, or at least, I feel the songs are kind of rushed, especially with the dynamics of a rock group, and string section. But like I said, great group, thats pretty much their only flaw.

I found NoI more influenced by classical Italian Prog (if they ever heard of one, he-he) like QUELLA VECCHIA LOCANDA or LOCANDA DELLE FATE, especially in piano/violin interplays (while guitars are pretty math-rocky indeed). Awesome band, really

What about THE PIRATE SHIP QUINTET? Any fans out there?

For The Pirate Ship Quintet: http://www.sounddevastation.co.uk/

Check out the Myspace pages of all of those bands mentioned. They  have links most of the time from places to buy their albums.

I'm a fan.Tongue

Love the 3 songs in their EP. Like I said in my review, Post-Rock bands need to use more the Trumpet!! I love how they use it in the intro to the first song on the EP.

For some similar sounding trumpet in Post-Rock check out this tasty band:  http://www.myspace.com/thesemonsters

They're huge prog rock fans, but it isn't really shown on their music. What is shown is one of the best trumpet playing in Post-Rock that's very atmospheric and lazy (in a good way). Sadly their best song, "Nice Day To Start A War", isn't sampled on their myspace page. Unhappy

EDIT
:
I misread the tags in their samples. Nice Day To Start A War is on their myspace page. It's the first song. It's not very long so please check it out. Highly recommended! Thumbs%20Up

Wow, I have had an EP by north, a new sludgy post metal band for a couple of months now, and today I was listening to it during class, and realised how great it sounds. For a glimpse, it sounds like a mix between the sludgy doomness of omega massif, but with a more positive feel like Isis.

Are they on the PA?

Shocked

I remember this band, I recommded it.  I kinda forgot about them, however.  Do you still need a bio write up?  I could do that, if it could help for their inclusion.

I'm disappointed - neither of these players are avant-garde!

Al di Meola.

[/QUOTE]

haha i know. but the poll itself is avant-garde

None are as good as ISIS - they are the kings imho - but the following are well worth checking out: Year of No Light; Cult of Luna; Conifer; Across Tundras; Minsk; Esoteric (be careful) and Neurosis of course.  Pelican just don't deliver the same punch for my taste, and lean more to post-rock Mogwai sound.

And some more straight forward (although that's pushing it) metallic: Wolves in the Throne Room; Intronaut; Gojira; Agalloch; late-period Enslaved.

And when it all gets too much Popul Vuh will bring you back from the dark side to a sylvan glade....

I usually ignore/dislike wind instruments, but hey, I like such dreamy (lazy, as you said ) sax playing! Very good, their best song indeed (other 4 tracks from EP are good, but not enough...what? yes, I already have their EP )

Now listening to GRAYCEON...my favourite new band from 2007

That would be nice.Smile
All they need is a bio. PM it to me when finished so I can add them.

Not sure if this band is enough "out there" for you people but I came across them totally by accident last night, on a Mars Volta forum. Have A Nice Life they are called and here is a link:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=6126276

Gothic, industrial, shoegaze (?? eh, don't know about that...) reads the definition. Oh well, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to post rock so don't really know how accurate that description is. All I know is that it sounds pretty darn good and having downloaded the debut album that came out last month from this blog

http://last-train-tocool.blogspot.com/

I am prepared to order the actual record (a double album at that) as well.

There is a richness in this music that resonates with me, in a Cult Of Luna-sort of way, but added with a sprinkle of Radiohead and even Mew.

They have been added to RateYourMusic, too. Check them out if interested!
I was made to love magic
