try Behold...The Arctopus. Just some of the most insane instrumental tech metal I have heard. Extremely technical, no repetition, no hint of melody. I can't listen to them all the time but when i'm in the right mood I really enjoy them. Definitely try them out, they have some samples on this site. |

I opened a thread for this, not knowing there was this thread.
I have recently received a promo copy of Sculptured - Embodiment, but only today have I given it a first listen and boy am I surprised and amazed. This is excellent. Wow, they have progressed! This is wonderfully prog rock woven into metal form.
Intricate guitar playing, fast changing rhythms, cool tunes, excellent playing, richness of sound, combined vocal styles (growling and clear) – a recipe for excellence. This is turning out to be a great album. |

While I'm here, let me second the Sclera recommendation.
In addition I'll also recommend In Lingua Mortua.
Here's a short review I wrote for another website and also posted here in PA - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=159495
Oh, and get that Sculptured album, it's fantastic.

Nice to see someone else besides me who likes Theory in Practice, they are incredible.
If you like Spiral Architect you should try out Twisted Into Form,a band that contains ex members of Spiral Architect and Extol.

Ive been heavily into 'shuggs for several years now, and i never tire of their sound and disorienting (almost hypnotic) feel. Even their production is amazing. I still remember the first time i listened to 'caosphere' and was totally and utterly blown away by it. It felt as though the speakers were shooting shards of glass (no, i was not high...) the guitar tone is unlike any other on that LP

My two favourites of the genre are Spastic Ink and Spiral Architect, both of which I only discovered upon joining the forum in December, although I started listening to both of them bands last month. Are there many more humor tech prog bands like Spastic Ink around, but perhaps with a different musical approach anyone could suggest I try out?

Try out Unexpect, kind of humorous, but with a big avant garde touch to it.

I'm disappointed - neither of these players are avant-garde! Al di Meola.
haha i know. but the poll itself is avant-garde
|

In a Flesh Aquarium is one of the best metal albums I've ever heard
seriously. the biggest stumbling block might be the vocals, but then again, this is the EXTREME thread so I guess that's a given |

Given I like Necrophagist, love Opeth and Agalloch, the extreme vocal style can be very well suited to certain music, and generally doesn't bother me. |
