has anyone heard of a tech metal band named dark angel? i'm interested to hear them because i saw one of their albums advertised as "9 songs, 67 minutes, 254 riffs" or something like that. i thought that kind of thing fit in with this thread, though i don't believe they are listed (however wikipedia did say something about progressive thrash).

Dark Angel started out as a thrash band (an excellent one as well) but got more technical as time passed by. The "9 songs, 67 minutes, 254 riffs" album was their last album I think, named "Time Does Not Heal". It's one of the best later thrash albums actually, in my opinion, and it's highly recommended if you like proggy and more technical thrash alà Justice era Metallica or Rust In Piece era Megadeth!

so i just bought between the buried and me's "colors" today. i'm about halfway through and this stuff is really blowing me away. i had high expectations because of all the fanfare about this but this is really great. maybe now i can go back through the older stuff. i didn't like what i had heard from alaska too much before but i think it warrants being checked out.

I would definitely give Alaska a chance.

An interesting BtBaM album is the album of covers called The Anatomy Of.They play quite a few prog tunes, and what is surpising is tunes that you think they would ruin(Queen's "Bicycle Race")they play to perfection.

My favorite cover on the album is their version of Soundgarden's "The Day I Tried to Live".Tommy Rogers sings his a** off on that tune.

i see they do quite the assortment of songs on that album. i really want to hear three of a perfect pair especially. but i will definitely be giving the older stuff a try. i'm looking forward to their tour with dream theater, opeth, and 3.

as am I Tongue their covers are spot on for the most part actually

as for Alaska, I'd listen to as many samples as possible, because while there are some tracks on there I really like (Selkies ranks with their best songs, and Backwards Marathon is really good too) a lot of it is too death-y for me. The Silent Circus other than Mordecai did nothing for me.

at this point all i've heard from alaska is the title track, and i'm not completely sure if i like it or not yet. one of my friends has it, i'll have him play it sometime and i'll see if i like it.

It discussed me, 90% nonstop vocals, 5% Drums only 5% semi inspired tech metal.

However, the fact that no Meshuggah album is even considered a key album of the genre pisses me off a bit. I mean, they are truly innovative.

Speaking of which, what other bands in this genre should I check out? I'm looking into expanding that aspect of my music collection a bit. I like Jnes Kidman's vocal style; it's powerfull and aggressive, but not that cookie monster crap. Any other bands in the genre that are similar to Meshuggah?

Try Meshuggah guitarist Frederik Thordendal's project Special Defects and the album Sol Niger Within out,you won't be disappointed.

I'm a little busy at the moment but will list some good tech/extreme prog metal recommendations later.
