That guitarist list is incredibly lazy - it wasn't compiled by a guitarist.

...and people should stop bashing Timberlake just because of who he is, and listen to what the guy does.

The important thing is not to stop questioning.

Quote How do you measure greatness?

I don't know, it's a stupid list and you shouldn't really take it seriously... it's just someone elses opinion and was drawn up from their prespective.

In my view, a great guitarist is someone who can play well, knows the instrument inside out,  can experiment with new techniques and who is always always trying to improve.

Maybe Johnny Ramone was more influential than Zappa.

That's definitely the most depressing thing I've read all day.

pfffff.....  there might be an element of truth there perhaps.. who knows.... we don't have to like punk.... but you can't ignore it.

Actually, Micky, I was saying exactly that. It's depressing to me because it is a fairly true statement. Punk bands like the Ramones, Sex Pistols, the Clash, etc. have had arguably way more influence on the music that followed (especially including modern music), than Frank Zappa has had. The only popular/mainstream music nowadays that I can say has been influenced by Zappa would be Weird Al Yankovic, and that's merely from a humor-in-music standpoint (not much by way of technicality).

And it makes me somewhat sad that that's the way it is... but on the other side of things, I suppose that it just makes Frank Zappa that much greater and original... or something.

The guitarists list is nightmarishly bad. They should have the decency to redo it and ask someone intelligent for input. Kurt Cobain shou;dn't be allowed within ten feet of it. Lyricists, absolutely, but guitarists? No Steve Vai? Are you serious. EVH number 70. I'm amazed they managed to put Hendrix in the right place. I'm sure the editor had to fix that. Influence should be the biggest factor, but it'll be a cold day in hell before Cobain influences more than EVH and Tony Iommi.

You are absolutely right; I think we should all commend him for bringing "Sexy Back." LOL Those creative beats and rhymes he makes certainly are infectious!

Surprises: that KC's isn't "21st Century Schizoid Man;"

that Neil Young's IS "Cortez The Killer;" (Down By The River?)
Kraftwek's IS "Autobahn;" (Why bother?)
Yes's IS "Starship Trooper" (Something from CTTE?)

not to mention  'Can You Hear me Knockin' is a killer frickin song  Clap  Hard to call it the best.. with so many great  songs by them but it is right with Monkey Man as my favorite from the Stones... and  to these eyes.. it isn't out of place on that list at all... shame it wasn't twice the length it was.

I agree with Micky, stonie, and inverted, and I also say that Purple Rain is magnificence. Prince may be the weirdest guy on Earth, but his music is amazing.

Embarrassed I know my comments were bound to create some controversy, so sorry to everyone, but here's my defense:

Stonebeard - for Jane's Addiction I have only heard "Jane Says", so maybe I was a little unfair to point them out; that song just doesn't make them seem very special.

Micky - I do really love the Stones, just Can't You Hear Me Knockin' doesn't strike me as at the top of their song list. If the list was 6min+ songs, I would have elected Sympathy For The Devil.

I actually didn't say I hated any of these bands, per se. I enjoy Bruce Springsteen very much, and would have preferred a song like Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) [Live] (I find Jungleland somewhat boring/overrated). Once again, I've been unfair with Funkadelic, though. I have only heard the name... so maybe that was an accidental bolding Embarrassed.

Sorry, that's the only Prince song I've heard (the live version), and I can't say that I like it.

Jane Says is possibly the least representative Jane's Addiction song. Three Days is definitely one of their best.

Is Can't You Hear Me Knockin' on Guitar Hero 2? It might explain its appearance on the list.

Funkadelic's Maggot Brain isn't a funk song, it's one of the best guitar solos ever recorded.

I played guitar in a blues band many years ago, we played a blues version of Purple Rain. It was as bad as it sounds. Wink

LOL Nice try, Micky. Guitar Hero is a video game franchise. Basically it's Dance Dance Revolution with guitars, and people waste away their time playing fake guitar instead of learning how to do it for real. It's very sad, actually.
