White and Cobain were guitarist that set trends and changed the enviorment of the music industry. Eddie Van Halen, though, i'm not a fan, does deserve to be up their since he did that as much as White and Cobain. And I don't see anything special about Randy Rhodes.

anyhow....  White may have possible impact with his guitar style and 'playing' .. but Cobain?...  it was the music.. the attitude.. the larger sh*tfts in musical tastes that his group was but a part of.. .but it was not his guitar playing....  as I said... he is there.. for his name. Not as a guitar player

I agree. I'm happy they chose a Can track, I just like the other tracks I mentioned slightly more.

And your probably right. Kurt Cobain really wasn't really an original guitarist, J Mascis and King Buzzo, his big influences that did much more to create an original sound should be on that list instead of Cobain who kinda just copied their styles.

same here... even those twits at RS have to recognize what a massively influential group Can  is.. and have a spot for them on the list.  Sure they had to touch upon all kinds of musical angles..but it was  nice to see Can in there.

I'm not a Melvins fan so I can't comment on the Buzzo comparison but I don't hear any of J Mascis in Cobain's guitar playing. Anyway, Cobain was a huge influence on my guitar playing (less is very often more), as was Mascis (more is often more too!).

Well, he was IMO the first guitarist to actually do something with pinch harmonics, and I also think he had a much better taste at using the tapping tecnique in heavy metal songs than Van Halen, who seemed to make a circus show off of it.

As it's a list in a mainstream pop/rock magazine, I have to agree. I'm not going to lose any sleep over the percentage of prog tracks included, or squabble about the choice (yes I am, it should be Halleluwah, Yoo Doo Right or Mother Sky, not Bel Air! Wink).

Bel Air is a fabulous piece of music...  maybe not a 'out there' as you might want... but it has a beauty that something to behold...
It's Rolling Stone, what do you expect. They just pick what's most obvious. The only reason they put Can on their is too appeal to the experimental rock loving hipsters that probably won't read their magazine until one of their friends is like "dude, that weird band Can you like was mentioned in Rolling Stone!"

this is what I expect from RS.. .that list was a VAST improvement over crap like this hahahhahah

I don't whats terrible about that list. There are plenty of lesser known, progressive guitar on that list. Sure there are a lot of lame ones but you have to realize that Rolling Stone's audience is all music fans in general and they have to satisfy everyone. That's why it's pointless to complain about them.

What's terrible about the list is Zappa is below Johnny f**king Power Chord Ramone

I doubt it and anyway.. so what?

The list is The Greatest Guitarists of all time, not the most influential.

It sickens me to see Cobain near the top. What a joke.

Agreed, you cant make a list that says greatest guitarists of all time then put Jack white in front of Steve Howe.

if you can think of a greater measure of greatness than 'influence'  I'd love to hear it

How do you measure greatness?

Most albums sold?
Most influential?
Most notes per second?
Most hummable?

I really like Zappa but I prefer Nirvana and The Ramones. The real sickener is that Gregg Ginn is only at 99! Wink

does influencing simplicity and making the instrument virtually unimportant in the context of the song count as GREAT?
if so put Mr. Ramone at number 1

yin and yang brother....  look at this way....   does influencing all kinds of technical magic and making it SO important make it any greater..... lose the prog fan mentality and recognize that it is the CHANGES in prevailing wisdom with regards to guitar playing... that makes the player great...

The only reason Randy Rhodes is fabled more than the typical hair metal shredder, is because he played with Ozzy.

I see where you're coming from, but I don't think Johnny Ramone himself would've even thought himself a great guitarist. Punk really doesn't feature guitar for any other purposes than to maintain the simple key.....and I understand what you mean about technicality, which is why I absolutely despise Mr. Malmsteen.....I don't hate Johnny Ramone (his music's another story) but I just don't think he was a great guitarist. At all. It's a blatant example of RS trying to please people. What makes him any better or worse than the guitarist from The Sex Pistols or the Clash?
