one reason I enjoyed Systematic Chaos' lyrics so much is that they did not seem to be taking themselves seriously AT ALL. I mean, basing a story on a manga (In the Presence of Enemies) or a Lovecraftian beast that rises up and destroys things isn't exactly A Change of Seasons LOL. In their live setting at the last show I was at, they didn't seem to be too stiff, and had fun with it throughout. (the animation for The Dark Eternal Night was hysterical)

That's cool. Some cheerful banter, was there?SmileClap

I'm willing to be convinced of their mere mortal humanity.Wink

I really find the perpetual portrayal of adolescent anger & alienation hard to swallow from grown men who get paid huge amounts of money to play in front of huge, adoring crowds. Look and the ticket receipts and smile at the crowd, guys -- it won't kill you.

(Now, why not play something nice for Mom, or that old guy in the Yes shirt, or your lovely wife, just for a brief change of pace?Smile)

Your rampaging psychopaths, demons, tanks and goose-stepping guitars are all well and good, but sometimes I just like to lie in a musical field of flowers, or contemplate a sweetly-singing songbird. Yes, sometimes for us humans, along with all the bad stuff, there is beauty, love, peace, and -- believe it or not -- happiness. Shocked   (see my sig)

^ Sorry if any of those last words offend anyone in this muy macho metal thread.Wink

Maybe a longer holiday, no releases, no side porjects and tours for a while. A creative break would be useful for them I think.

Just like any other music project, they need to focus on music more and more - and not less and less, as they tend to.

I believe Dream Theater has to stay just the way they are. A perfect mix of metal and prog. I suggest, let's keep it that way .

Wow, you must really hate The Who. And Rush.
Actually i do enjoyThe Who, but i don't consider their singer as an essentiel and if you think Geddy Lee doesn't contribute to rush's Music...

DT doesn't need anything. If you don't like DT, or hate DT, or when you're listening to DT feel like there's million things you could change, well...I'll tell you this: DT doesn't need anything. It's YOU who need stop listening to DT, as you obviously don't like their music!

It's like I said "What do Sigur Ros need for me to like them?" Well, they need to... turn into a complete different band! LOL

there's some things that can be fixed in some DT songs (or albums, like erase the complete 6DOIT-side ONE) but the band is what it is.

I do like DT, i am amazed at what they can do but that isn't my point.
The talent of the DT members is indeniable, but why aren't they not up there with the greats ?
I wanted people in this topic to say what they thought was wrong with DT ( a lot of people share the same point of view here) and say how according to them DT could evolve and create a masterpiece to the majority of the proggers.
It's interesting because in this topic people are saying partly what they like and what they maybe would want to here in a song so were are coming to a kind of definition of what proggers like in prog in a way.
And the band is what it is but could anyone have predicted Fear Of A Blank Planet listening to The Sky moves Sideways 10 years ago ? they are 2 different albums that show we can stay faithfull to what we like and prog and get better (the better is a question of point of view of course).

You must be kidding.
How many times to people have to be told you don't like prog metal?
It's just tedious now. Yes we get it you like Genesis and want to stay back in the 70's, but times have changed, prog metal exists, it's more complex than symphonic prog and that's one immediate prog attribute. Live with it.

^ "more complex than symphonic prog" ... this could spark some interesting debate which should probably take place in a different thread. But as much as I like Dream Theater I can't really agree with that statement ... I would say that Prog Metal is generally more complex and demanding in terms of musicianship and "dexterity"/"discipline" of the musicians. Classic Symphonic Prog on the other hand can be much more involved in terms of composition and lyrical/musical sophistication. Also, prog metal often uses rather rigid form and song/track structure, while classic symphonic prog is more open to experimentation and generally less "tight" in terms of pre-defined structure.

Anyway: There's no reason to not like both!Smile

Yeah I know, in fact I am a big fan of both. But I think you hit the nail on the head in the way in which they're complex and I agree, there are differing degrees of complexity in different areas of their music.
Yet, I still get annoyed at his terrible attitude towards metal in general. Hence my rant.

They just need to go through some tough times again. Like when they were just writing songs in basements...with the sh*tty feeling of no singer. Some of my favorites are dedications to love ones that passed away. They can't be happy...basically.

No, you must be kidding.

I have made it very clear a number of times that I have nothing against Prog Metal whatsoever - you're making up your own story here.

I do not want to stay back in the 1970s - your slurs are most unwelcome.

I didn't realise that prog metal exists - thanks for telling me.

...and what I have heard of it is NOT more complex than symphonic prog - how you can say it is more complex is totally baffling.

I don't need to be told by some voracious prog metal fanboy who thinks that the only good music is prog metal, eats, sleeps and probably craps prog metal that my opinions are somehow wrong.

Well Certi....... first of all, have a pair of clappies for that last answer Big%20smile

ClapClap

Now, I ask you: I personally dislike DT but I consider them, anyway, a prog band, in the sense that they are complex (more than symphonic prog? Arguably), they have that epicosity (or epicness?) thing and, in general, there is a permanent use of odd time signatures and countless beat changes..... Then, what does make you state the abscense of prog in DT?
The best you can is good enough...

certif1ed must be an idiot if he can't tell that DT is in fact prog.  They are more prog than any other progmetal band anywhere.  I have over 100 progmetal cds and progmetal is not the only genre I listen to.  I can't get away from U2 fanatics that think they are experts on Dream Theater. Opinionated morons ruin more threads and they can FOAD.

Symphonic Rock is more about structures and harmonic invention... Many people think that what makes a band complex is the speed of the playing, the amount of sections a song has or the changes in time signature. I do know what Cert1fied means and to a degree I concurr. I'm DT's famous fanboy but I can recognize that.

Cert1fied, you could avoid idiotic remarks like the one below (or above) my post and the one you answered to just by... ignoring prog-metal threads or at least not making stingy jokes like the one you made. You know how people will react. Is there any need for this?

Peace and Prog... And DT for all mankind...Tongue

^ Is there any need for that? Perhaps not. But metal fanboys as Coleio could also be tolerant enough to pass by such ironic commentaries, couldn't they? You don't have to answer for all those who react so.

I'm not. I'm just saying that comments like Cert1fied's are perfect to incite all kind of idiotic rants.... There was no need for that comment. We all are smart enough to know what they could cause. I have done things like that, and I learned.

All I say is that a bit of irony doesn't kill anyone...... and such people who react inmaturely are finally banned or at least warned. I wanna believe that Certif1ed knew how passionately some people would reply against his commentary, before posting it.
