Topic: Porcupine Tree vs Dream Theater Posted: October 03 2007 at 15:36 |
I set this poll up because i was having an argument, or like a discussion with a friend and I said porcupine tree were more 'proggy' than dream theater and alot weirder and 'out there' and i had a list of arguments I cant be bothered to type out here, anyway he said that dream theater were proggier, for reasons that I dont understand becuase he said 'you have to play guitar to understand the reasons' things like difference in rhythm etc, anyway I was wondering what the opinion on here is

Progressive doesn't necessarily mean more technically proficient. Porcupine Tree are more experimental than DT ever will be, and they have proved to be able AND competent at different approaches throughout their career, whereas DT have their own sound they so rarely derivate from.
To me, PT is more progressive than DT.

Porcupine Tree are more Progressive in the truest sense of the word and are more musically adventurous than Dream Theater. However PT can be guilty of trawling their previous releases for ideas from time to time but then who doesn't.
Dream Theater are an excellent band though if a little predictable at times.

jesus .... .whoever started this poll should rot... you have earned my eternal rage hahahha
Dream Theater... and I am not a fan. ... by a mile. Dream Theater
may be w**kers in search of melody... but they were far more
progressive than PT. PT is some great music... but not
exactly the most progressive I've ever heard. At least we an
credit DT for defining an established genre of progressive rock.

In terms of progressiveness, DT is the lesser of two evils . I only give them credit for pioneering prog-metal, as Micky pointed out. Musically, I enjoy PT considerably more, however.

Dream Theater has attempted to change there sound.
Falling into Infinity was pretty good except for too much filler.
Octavarium was abyssimal.
Porcupine Tree changes every album and there all excellent.
Good enough for me...PT by a mile.

Only PT I have is "In Absentia", but I prefer most of Dream Theater's stuff, so my wote goes to DT.

I like Porcupine Tree, but I'd say Dream Theater are more progressive when they're at their best. However, that doesn't happen as often as I'd like.

Both bands are great, but I think DT are more progressive & by far more technical . I also find them much more waried compared to PT's addictive, but repetetive style of playing and quickly recognizable sound almost no matter what PT album you pick. Just compare; Images & Words / 6DOIT and SC to The Sky Moves Sideways / In Absentia / Fear Of A Blank Planet, where FOABP is "just " a great mix of two previous albums! Both bands are amazing, but for me, DT has much bigger replay value, because I just prefer technical dynamic music consisted of jazz, rock & metal, mixed vith great variety melody, emotion, energy & flow (no other band than DT is better for me, in that). PT has other great pros; gr8 addictive rythm, choruses, psychedelia & flow, but I get bored of their music quiker, & I listen & like both bands ALOT.

Porcupine Tree! I've always felt that they were much more progressive than Dream Theater.

I absolutely believe that Porcupine Tree is more progressive than Dream Theater. The closest to progressive Dream Theater was, to me, was with their earlier albums. PT however is still going strong with the progressiveness, just look at Fear of a Blank Planet, dubbed "Porcupine Tree's most hardcore AND softcore album to date", and the song Anesthisize named "The Beast" for it's length and diversity. If that isn't progressive then Dream Theater is a straight metal band. (So you DT fans better say its progressive or your saying your precious DT is straight ahead metal )
