Modern Drummer lists the following albums as important all time prog classics in the October special issue on prog rock. In the article in question, they're lated chronologically and categorized in terms of subgenres, but they're not ranked in terms of importance or goodness or whatever: Proto prog:

They seem to have their categories confused in certain areas. 90125 is classic prog? Queensryche is neo prog?!

I like their prog-metal choices (minus Metallica), but it's awesome that they didn't really go with obvious things.

Hmm, they seem to be more conservative about what constitutes prog-metal than we are here - prog, more metal, less rock, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I would haver swapped SymphX for PoS, but meh, it's only a list. (I assume someone's counted that there are 50 ... you know what drummers are like for counting anything over 4...)

Superunknown has some great odd time sigs. Maybe this pushed into their interpretation of Prog.

I can't agree with many of their choices but they could have done much, much worse and made complete and utter fools of themselves.

doesn't matter what categorys or non prog bands, we all have different opinions of what is and isn't prog, I think its quite a reasonable and representative list, a lot better than some of the crud I've read in so called 'music magazines'
