Modern Drummer lists the following albums as important all time prog classics in the October special issue on prog rock. I like their prog-metal choices (minus Metallica), but it's awesome that they didn't really go with obvious things.

Hmm, they seem to be more conservative about what constitutes prog-metal than we are here - prog, more metal, less rock, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I would haver swapped SymphX for PoS, but meh, it's only a list. (I assume someone's counted that there are 50 ... you know what drummers are like for counting anything over 4...) ------------- What? |

| doesn't matter what categorys or non prog bands, we all have different opinions of what is and isn't prog, I think its quite a reasonable and representative list, a lot better than some of the crud I've read in so called 'music magazines' |

I've completely missed the boat on Zappa. I have always thought he was more of a blues guy than a prog guy. I recently purchased his "Strictly Commercial" greatest hits album. Quite frankly my familiarity with him was "Valley Girl" and "Yellow Snow". One day I hope to explore his material.
I have heard nice things about Collosseum, but have yet to hear anything from them.
I have heard one or two songs from Faust and Soft Machine and suspect that I might eventually explore them further. The Soft Machine seemed more jazz than prog though and although I somewhat like jazz, my collection is pretty devoid of any that doesn't have the name Corea or Bruford on it.
Lastly, I am trying to like Tool since they are so popular on this site. I like alternative and I like the rockier side of prog metal (versus the thrashier side). I now have a handful of their albums. I still consider them more alternative than prog and I at least like some of their sound and music. Probably won't become a favorite of mine, but they have grown on me a bit. -------------
