Vai by far.
Satch bores me, although Midnight is a beautiful song.
Vai isan amazing musician and a great performer. He has that Zappa oddness about him, he can phrase wonderful solos, write great songs and suites, and enjoys the wonders of non-western music and incorporates it into his music. He's got a decent voice too.

If we defer to Joe Satriani's guitar knowledge, he's stated himself that Steve Vai is the better player. When Joe wrote Mystical potato head thing, he had to practice very hard to get what he heard in his head to come out on guitar. When he played it for Steve, well, Vai played it note for note as if he'd been playing it for years.
But both kick most guitarists (including the usual "prog" giants) A** easily & consistently.

Super Colossal was a very, very disappointing album for me ... one word: "boring" ! As far as Vai is concerned ... do you even know Vai songs other than For the Love of God? Consider other well known songs such as Bad Horsie, Answers, Sisters, Call it Sleep?, The Attitude Song, ... are you really saying that they all sound alike?

Vai is more technically adept with more speed and precision. Furthermore, he has the benefit of a music education from Berklee. Personally, I prefer Vai because I find his playing and songwriting more interesting; he's like a more technical version of Frank Zappa, with whom he played early on.

Well, I disagree that Vai has more speed and precision. Furthermore, formal education doesn't mean anything unless you're a pseudo-intellectual 14 year old who happens to be impressed by such things. (I've been to Berklee). I'm aware he played with Zappa, compositionally they are similar, guitar-wise they are very different.

Satriani gave Vai guitar lessons in the early 70s. According to Wikipedia Vai was 13 years old and Satriani was 17 years old at that time, and the lessons lasted only for a few years. I'd say that Vai's style was much more influenced by his years with Zappa though ...

You just named a few songs which don't sound alike to Joe because obviously the guy isn't an identical clone; but most of the important stuff composed by Vai sound clearly influenced by Joe and Zappa; at least for me, a blend not suitable at all

I wasn't comparing Vai's songs to Satriani's songs, I was comparing Vai songs to each other.

IMO it's ridiculous to say that Vai sounds like Satriani just because at one time Satch gave lessons to Vai. The trademark songs of each of them were written in the 80s and afterwards, a decade after those lessons had taken place and both artists had developed significantly since then.

It's a close call, since they are both the most progressive shredders out there, and make music as opposing to simply flaunting their skill. I'm gonna go with Vai, just cause I get into his stuff more, but I still love me some Satch.
