Wich one???

it doesn't need to be by a progressive band

a rule: Must be only one song

I would go for 2112 by rush

breakdown by alan parson's project

Bang bang my baby shot me down by nancy sinatra

When I think of an epic., it usually means a long suite( a very long song of 10+ minutes long )or a series of songs that link together to form a concept., but judging from your list Breakdown from I robot and the Nancy Ninatra one it seems to me you just mean song.

Exactly what is your definition of an "epic"

epic, for me is any song, (doesnt matter how long) that tells a story

Break dow, part of a story, about robot rebelaton, and bang bang, well yhe story is stup about a relationship. Tha´'s an epic for, me, any way 2112 does fit your epic definition

so you mean best narrative...epic should really imply something big, expansive, or at least heroic...but that's as picky as I'll get. I think it's a good topic either way

For pure storytelling (and epic size, sometimes) it's hard to beat Arlo Guthrie. I suppose those of you who don't celebrate Thanksgiving might not appreciate it, but "Alice's Restaurant" is a story I can listen to at least once every year.

I have to give an honorary award to the Charlie Daniels Band for "Devil went Down to Georgia" . It's heading for kitsch territory, but I'll bet nobody who was around when it came out has forgotten the story. Great demon fiddles, too.

I think one of the biggest epics has to be the first side of "Hemispheres"- the gods at war over passion versus reason makes for a grand story.

Funny now that I think of it, prog should have a lot of 'story' songs but a surprising number of works are more descriptive than narrative; scenes and events are common subject matter, but following the 'introduction/ conflict/ resolution' model isn't as standard as one might suspect.

yesss, that was exactly what I was thinking, when I wanted to put Dogs, I realized it was descriptive, and also welcome to the machine, and tom sawyer, that' why I put Bang bang, it's incredible hw in two minutes you can hear a hole story, and such a good piece of music,

Oh, how could I forget "Ode to Billy Joe" by Bobbie Gentry? Ranks right up with "Devil Went Down to Georgia" for pure storytelling. Believe it or not, a lot of dance and hip-hop bands have sampled the opening drums, too.

Epic, as the movie genre is a long story or big amount of information narrated or played in short lapse of time, for example The Ten Commandments tell the story of more than 40 years of Exodus in three hours, Ben Hur tells 5 years story of Judah Ben Hur in a couple of hours.

Supper's Ready tells a free version of The Book of Revelations in 18 minutes but Can Utility and the Coastliners tells the story of King Canute in 5:45 but still an Epic.

So the length of the song is really not important, even when because the movie epics used to be long, people qualify every long song as an epic, what IMO is not accurate.

  1. Supper's Ready (Genesis - Foxtrot)
  2. Karn Evil 9 (ELP - Brain Salad Surgery)
  3. All the Seats were Occupied (Aphrodite's Child)
  4. Hamburger Concerto (Focus- Hamburger Concerto)
  5. Illusions on a Double Dimple (Triumvirat - Illusions on a Double Dimple)
  6. The White Witch (Magenta - Revolutions)
  7. Children of the Sun (Magenta - Revolutions)
  8. Close to the Edge (Yes - Close to the Edge)
  9. Song of Sheherezade (Renaissance - Sheherezade and other Stories)
  10. The March to Eternal City (Triumvirat - Spartacus)
