I realize that "Flatly lie for no reason" isn't one of the choices - unless the Dio/Iron Maiden choice was meant to embody that.

I don't have a 'favourite' band but if pushed for an answer I tell them Van der Graaf Generator.They then usually wish that they had never asked.

It depends on the person. If he/she have similar tastes to me, I say some of my favorite bands. If not, I just say, "so many of them, like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Metallica" etc. or some other bands that are well known that I like.

Why not answer truthfully? If someone asks you who your favorite band is, odds are they'd like to know. Maybe you'll turn them on to something new they they never would have heard about otherwise. You can always explain with a single sentence so that the other person doesn't feel stupid. ("They're this really cool progressive band from Italy!")
I generally don't like to patronize people because I wouldn't want others to do it to me.
Fortunately, I don't have this problem because my favorite band is Queen.

I name a relatively famous band that i like just easier but i do hate where it may lead because alot of the time people assume that band represents everything you listen to
