I ask this for fun and to kill time, but also because I'm aware it's easy to kill conversations this way - when some Deerhoof-t-shirt-wearing indie kid asks me who my favourite band is, I say King Crimson - it's not true, but I do like them very much and said indie kid stands a better chance of having heard of them, whereas if I said Present that might conclude the conversation with an "er, oh." Do you see what I mean?

perhaps you're prepared to extoll the virtues of a truly overlooked band to anyone who asks? Me, I compromise. ;P

There CAN be cases when your favorite band is somewhat famous, like in my case... So, even though most people have not heard of Dream Theater, some at least have heard of them because a friend who plays guitar or is a musician says they're wonderful.... I've met a few people that knew of the NAME Dream Theater in that way.... But, anyway, I always say it.

When people start asking "what are your other favorite bands" that's when things get complicated: The Flower Kings, though famous for us proggers, are just as unknown for the common person as Bacamarte. And when I say Genesis, I QUICKLY clarify: "the 70's Genesis, not the one you've heard with Invisible Touch"...

I instantly fall into a shock-like state when I realize that the person in question will always remember me as someone whose favourite band is [...], so having carefully pondered for a while whether I should answer "King Crimson", "Tangerine Dream" or "The Smiths", I end up mumbling something inaudible with a paralyzed expression on my face. Cry

Thankfully, my favourite band is Metallica Approve

But I enjoy talking to people about the prog music I listen to, especially if they seem to be half interested... though I won't be naming too obscure bands, maybe just scratching the surface, telling them a bit about KC, Genesis, Yes, DT, Opeth and the more fcommercially succesful bands I know.

I usually say a relatively famous band.

Truthfully. I'll either say Rush or Genesis, as they are joint faves. Depends on what I'm listening to most at the time.

I answer with pride: Led Zeppelin. But it's not like that would have any effect on anything, most people in this part of the world barely know anything about classic rock.

I always answer truthfully. King crimson it is! I consider them obscure, simply because they are highly unknown to the general public. They are outright famous in the world of progressive rock though.
for those about to prog, we salute you.

Well my favorite band is relatively well known. I've even seen Radiohead played on the channel MTV hits, which is usually the most pop a channel can get (it was a special on animation, but the fact remains, they are well known). So yeah, I always say Radiohead

How many of you have had to explain that your favorite band is Genesis with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett? Steve who? Genesis? Oh you mean that short bald guy! Invisible touch, right?

I've been there many times..

These days I kick off by saying "I like Genesis. That's everything they did between 1970 and 1980. I should point out I do NOT like Invisible Touch"

You can see the grin forming on their lips the moment you say Genesis.

you waffle over the fact that you have no favourite band etc.

And then I let them know I like esoteric music by bands that they have probably never heard of. Then I name some and they agree with me that they have not heard of them.

Occasionally they know of them and then the conversation goes on in earnest.

I SHOULD answer "truthfully...famous," because almost everyone seems to have heard of Tull, if not heard them.

But I'm gonna answer the Dio one. 'Cause that's the most metal answer. And I do often invoke Satan hands when talking about the Tull.

IMO I think its really cool to dish out bands that NO ONE has heard of. It truly sends them to a point where they're are like....woah....who are you?
