There are examples of those harmonic/melodic parts in other bands, but not as a general sound of the album, but they do appear in songs, either throughout the songs, or in parts of a song.

Taal are not exactly dissonant, but I have heard they have a new album coming out later this year, but apparently they've shrunk in size somewhat..

All has been said really.  Of course, there's always the Japanese brutal/noise scene.  I am sure you're aware of Boris and Merzbow and even Boredoms.

Not a recent album, but try Musica Transonic - Orthodox Jazz

That album hurt my ears!  The band features Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins), Kawabata Makoto (Acid Mothers Temple) and Asahito Nanjo (High Rise).

I believe their other albums maybe a bit more listenable.

I received my copy of Mahaan a few days ago and expect to spin it soon, as like you, I love that band.

Of course if you define Avant-Prog to include bands like Taal then there are melodic Avant-Prog bands.Wink

In that case I think that these bands are borderline Avant ... the more melodic/harmonic the music is, the less Avant.Embarrassed

The first thing that came to my mind when I heard melodic Avant-Prog I thought Hella's new album, There's No 666 In Outer Space. It's a very accessible album and they still have that crazy playing of Zach and Hill, but now a bit more restrained.

Oh I agree Mike, that's why I would like to move them (back?) to Avant-Prog, as I feel they don't quite belong under Art Rock (even though the ART have know issues with them there).

To me, Avant-Prog can be melodic, much of Zappa's releases are for instance.  Infact, many chamber rock bands are melodic in many respects.

Melody and major notes do have a place in Avant-Prog, as far as I am concerned.

^ sure, but the melodic parts aren't what makes the bands Avant Prog ... on the other hand remove the dissonant/weird elements, and they're not really Avant anymore. The melodic parts provide an interesting contrast though!

Taal however have dissonance and weirdness in bounds, so of course they're not just a melodic band. Wink

Anymore albums this year of dissonance?  I don't have many "ugly" albums from this year so far, but there has to be more out there, there absolutely has to be!  Cry  Dissonant albums from this year I have:

A couple of those were recommendations from you guys, maybe that list will give some of you some suggestions too.  But I would definitely appreciate some more recommendations.  And relatively tight compositions would be nice as well (I'm not one for improv and noodling).

What may this be? I have not seen this release. I know Kneale has done three other albums this year, I don't think they have been released yet, not sure. Last year was stunning for him with Our Love Will Destroy the World and Curved Surface Destroyer; the later being one of my favourite B.C.M. albums.

Glad to see this thread is back on track after a pointless exercise in categorization and pigeonholing.

Mecca, I know you don't like the heavy stuff so much, but there is an extreme metal album from 2007 that's as dissonant and out-there as any avant-rock I've ever heard: Car Bomb's Centralia. The riffs on this one are just shockingly ugly (and awesome). Like a grindcore version of Gorguts' avant-metal classic of a decade ago, Obscura. Lots of harsh screaming and heavy riffs, so if you don't like metal be warned - but if you want ugly and dissonant give it a chance.

Also, this kind of metal is super-super-tight, like Ahleuchatistas et al. No noodling or improv here.

Oh no, I'm fine with any form metal, but I like it to be experimental as well.  Radiation 4, I like because it sounds wacky, same with !T.O.O.H.!, Death Unit, Boris, etc.  I just don't like any genres of music that sound watered down and easy to pigeonhole, I don't like any of my music that sounds like the norm of the specified genre.  I like any music, as long as it has unique flavor that changes it from sounding "OMG this is black metal", "OMG this is pop", etc., etc....  And thank you for the recommendations!  Smile

Car Bomb f**king rules so far, the time signatures are crazy.

Also, another reason why I like dissonance is because "ugly" music most of the time sounds a bit more unique than the consonant songwriting, not that I don't like consonant music, but the word "dissonance" to me, just means "more interesting".

And also, I'm going to make sure to check the above recommendations as well, I'm not forgetting them, haha.  Thank you!  You have like 8 albums, what a goldmine!  Thanks again!
