How many original albums have you got? LP, CD, casettes, whatever.

I only got about 45 CDs and 20 LPs or so. I wish I was richer...

If I had to guess-timate, I'd say I had about 1,300 discs.

Hard to say really, I have over 83 GB of music on an external harddrive (mostly copied from CDs), and I'd say about 100 LPs.

If you've got a record player, you can expand your collection really easily for very little money if you find a couple good used record stores.  Most of my LPs cost between $1-3, with the exception of a few special ones which were more like $8.

Everything I can buy in my country I have. I used to import a lot of cds but the brazilian tax organs are trying very hard to disistimulate me. All in all, I have more than a thousand, almost two counting with the peer to peer friends' contributions (all substituted by the original when I find it).

I physically own between 80 and 100 Lps and original Cds, although my music collection overall reaches over 800+ albums

being poor sucks doesn't it.. we've all been there..

no idea about the size of mine to be honest...  never counted.

Come this summer though...  when my collection is merged with Raff's,  whose overall  collection might even be larger than mine.. and whose prog collection includes many I don't have (loves her English prog .. me Italian, Spanish, and French prog ...we mostly only have duplicates of the Big groups). We will have the collection to die for hahhahah.

Many hundreds of tapes and CDs.  Many of my CDs are classical.

I used to have a large LP collection, but it was at my parents' house which they sold (don't know if they were sold at a garage sale or thrown out).  Some were rare and valuable collectors LPs.

My 8-track collection went missing too.  My father never did approve of rock music (or anything not classical really), so I suspect they went to the dump.

I've been buying for over 35 years (I don't collect - I just buy) and reached the stage where I am too scared to actually count the exact number, because If I knew that then I'd know their total value and then would never sleep at night. Several people have volunteered to catalogue them for me, but the answer is always no. I know there are over 600 vinyl LP's because the removal men like to count the boxes every time we move house ("Wot you got in here then? Heavy metal?" - was funny the first time, but 20 boxes later I found it difficult to raise a smile). I have three pre-recorded cassettes. Forced to guess the total number of CD's I would say I have lots. My iPlod is sitting at 30G - all tx'd from CD's I own since I don't download.
What?

Allow me to take a guess then. Let's say you ripped them all at 128kb/s. Then you've got around 30,000 minutes of music. For the average record with 45-60 minutes, that amounts to 666-500 CDs. (note the Beast's number :D) Those only count for the CDs you actually ripped, so if you've got another 1000 stashed somewhere else.. that's a different story.

Not really rich here so much as persistent. I'm about to hit 1300 CD titles.

I got started in the age of LP. I have cassettes that I can't even play back anymore. I'm 42 and have been collecting CDs since the mid to early '80's.  If you're a music nut like me you can't help but start out gradually.  The older prog in my collection still give me pleasure as much as the new stuff.

I an imagine it's hard to be patient as the prog universe has grown so much since I first encountered it (the '70's).  I have found adding too much too soon can kind of give you a musical indigestion, or at the very least you tend to not absorb the newcomers enough to properly appreciate.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I agree completely. All these things start slowly, you buy what you can afford when you can afford it (however, when younger sometimes I would buy too many LP's and have to miss a few nights out down the pub because I was brokeCry). I think by the time I was 18 I owned about 100 albums in total.

Even when you are older, wiser and with a bit more cash in your pocket, there are still times when other priorities mean you cannot buy every CD you see.

You got time. Just know that as your collection grows, you may find yourself listening to each particular album less than you do now. SO where you may have listened to some of your favourites 20- 30 times, when you get a large number of albums, you'll see that even the new favourites get less air time.

I'm 21... so there's some time left to get my dignity back :D

But anyways, the local stores are crap. I won't buy mainstream records ( I don't know about you guys). And that's all they got here.

Over 1,000.  Not quite sure though.  CD's only - doesn't count cassettes or LPs.

I never counted either but I would say about 1200 CDs , around 400 Cassettes (yuk!) and about 1600 vinyls . BIg Big collection, mostly prog or prog related : no Stones, very little outright pop, no rap, no hip-hop, no country (all yuk for me) . I have 12 snarling dogs, three slithering King cobras and a nasty partridge with a machine gun in a pear tree guarding them.

I've got about 266 albums or so- I always like to keep close tab on what I've got. I've been seriously collecting/buying music for almost 2 and half years now. My collection is all on compact disc- I've got no cassettes and only a handful of vinyl LPs of albums I already have on CD. My dad has a killer vinyl collection, probably around 200-300 or so. I want it.

every time I trade in original Cd's I can't believe how worthless they are second hand I soon lost respect for them and decided that CDrs are the way to go in my part of the world anyway ,  I have about 1000 CD`s half are Cd`s,  my friends and myself share our music similar to what people did back in the vinyl days   with tapes  there's no difference don`t get all self righteous on me Smile

most  CD`s are only worth a fraction of the price second hand had they held closer to their value I`m sure they would be more popular
