Don't you remember reviewer "psychospaces" who used to give only 1 and 5 stars. He's back again:

Not exactly a bad review... Its just that his tracklist must have been screwed up, as most of his song descriptions don't fit the track he's supposedly describing. Perhaps he could be given a ring as to edit it?

interesting style, but:

  1. repeated reviews (and it's confusing for which the quotes were intended)
  2. hardly confident album/music appreciation

You are right Clarke. Since this guy is Prog Reviewer maybe he should be noticed to amend his reviews of Tako.

ISP reviews are also clearly not according to the guidelines. Too bad because we don't have enough reviews of those albums so any kind of review is welcome...

I believe we talked about old very old reviews then and that we are still trying to find a way to deal with them, since there were no guidelines when they were submitted.

PINK FLOYD — Wish You Were Here

Review by jrfernan

3%20stars Wow! I'm reviewing PF's WYWH and doing so on a site related to PROG music, no less!

This is a tough one, a REAL TOUGH one, to review; at least for me it is. As I'm typing this review the CD is playing in the background. 'Have a Cigar' just finished and 'Wish You Were Here' is making its entrance. As I'm listening, colorful memories and images of my youth pop into my head(some more vivid than others) and I can't help but feel nostalgic. Ah, the 70s!

That being said, I have some SERIOUS reservations about this, or any other, PF album being considered "prog". Why? you ask........well, very simple: PF is first and foremost a Blues band. They play blues and not much else. Granted, nobody plays the blues like The Floyd. They invented and perfected "Symphonic Blues" and although many have tried to copy them, none have succeeded. But that's what they are: a blues band; more more, no less.

If we allow blues bands to enter the prog realm then we need to make room for Hendrix's "Electric Lady Land' and Santana's "Abraxas". Each of those, IMO, MUCH better than WYWH. The musicianship on those two FAR EXCEEDS anything on WYWH. Heck, while we're at it, why not let Miles Davis into the mix as well! Wanna talk about progressive! Get the picture? :-)

But, I think I get it now....As long as the band/artist is British, or European(take Eloy, another blues band, PF clone) then they can be categorized as prog! Is that it?! It sure seems that way to me. For PF to be in the top five and no Hendrix or Santana seems kinda strange to me.

Now, as for the music on WYWH...

The 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' suite is a nice piece of blues. Not much else. Sure, it has the psychedelic touch and the funky keyboard comping at the end of the second part. It's all very moody and mellow, but it gets old after a few dozen listens. Not very technical and extremely basic to be considered prog.

'Have a Cigar' and 'Wish You Were Here' are radio friendly, Classic Rock songs. I struggle to find anything progressive about them.

Welcome to the Machine is the only piece I would consider prog on this recording. It takes some chances by adding analog synths to the mix, but again, nothing very intricate is going on there either.

Pink Floyd are what they are: a Classic Rock/Blues band that reached unprecedented heights via meticulous studio recordings and impeccable live reproduction of said recordings. But they are not progressive because their music is entrenched in the blues. If we allow blues to infiltrate the prog realm then we might as well open the door to blue grass. How about Bella Fleck?! Is he prog?!

Three stars for WYWH.

5 - Do not voice general opinions on matters such as whether a band/album/sub-genre should be included in the site, whether you agree with the star rating system, etc.. Such matters should be discussed in the forum. Keep the review pertinent to the specific album concerned. The reviews section is NOT the place for initiating or prolonging a debate.

Sorry, jrfernan, but you HAD to click OK to accept this before you submitted your review.

Problem paragraphs italicised - please remove them.

Oh, BTW,  Pink Floyd is NOT just a blues band, and your review does not validate your opinion beyond that - an opinion, which is not shared by the Prog community at large.

Please feel free to start a discussion on the subject - which I will look forward to Big%20smile

PAIN OF SALVATION — The Perfect Element Part 1
Review by shubb (rodrigo)

DREAM THEATER — Octavarium
Review by germanmmtd

5%20stars Well, I will not analize the album. If you want to know about it, you only have to listen it. But there are people who don't appreciate it, so I only want to say you: Octavarium (the eighth song) is fantastic, is the best song I ever listen. And the other songs are very good, too. So I give it five stars. I recommend you: listen Octavarium in the Score. Is fantastic.

DREAM THEATER — Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Review by germanmmtd

5%20stars Well, I will not analize the album. If you want to know about it, you only have to listen it. But there are people who don't appreciate it, so I only want to say you: Six degrees of inner turbulence, the second disc, is fantastic. It's the best in my opinion. And the first is very good, too. So I give it five stars.

DREAM THEATER — Systematic Chaos -Special Edition
Review by fratelmaestro

— First review of this album —

4%20stars I attend with anxiety in order to enjoy this to me masterpiece in 5:1 dolby surround. Creed that will be pleasant to listen to this group in 5:1, will be able to be appreciated every mimino particular of every single track. In more it will be able to be assisted to the usual megalomania of Portnoy that has created a amatoriale video of the band to the taken ones in the drawing up of this album. The 2 june I will assist to the first escape of the band with this album….I will tell to you!!!!

DREAM THEATER — Systematic Chaos
Review by whyname

5%20stars At first I want to say that the Octavarium was the end of the first chapter of DT....you must know it if you want to listen and write the review to Systematic Chaos...Mike Portnoy said that in Score...in special documentary about DT....you must have it if you want to listen Systematic Chaos and write the review about it.....So....when I saw the tracklist of the new album....in March I think....I knew that this album will be very dark...BUT....not in music....but in lyrics...yeah...so now we have May..and new album is here..almost...regular in june...and what is the SCH like?...So let me tell you that this album is the best album...not only of DT....but in Progmetal as while....and why?OK....lets go to the deep of SCH....as I said at the begining...this album is something strange....first album of DT...or ninth?...NO first....previously 8 albums was somewhere....not there than SCH...SCH is not here...in the Earth...but somewhere in Space...in Ifinity...MP said that...is it right?SCH starts different that all their previously albums.....very quick...yees....there are not any special sounds...voices...or intros...In The Presence Of Enemies Is total different start song that The Root....or As I Am...The Glass Prison...etc...so this is the first different element...in DT chapter no.2....and the end of SCH?....again very quick....INTPoE...this song ....the best Start i can not believe....guitar...bass...and after it Jordan solo...one of the best keybord solos that I ever heard...after...guitar solo....chorus of the song...perfect...james comes to SCH very vell...his voice is excelent....and the first song end...half....Forsaken...oh this is the next element in DT chapter no.2.....hard song?melodic?....both...perfect...relax before Constant Motion and The Dark Eternal Night....yes....Metallica in CM?...and what is the problem...it is very useful combination of styles...yes ....traditional DT songs...guitar...bass....keyboards...voices...of Mike Portnoy too....very very strange song...perfect....TDEN...so...very dark song...in music and in lyrics...the heaviest song of DT I think...but perfect riffs and chorus is fantastic....Repentance...the AA saga songs...BUT...ballad....like Pink Floyd...I think better than PF...because...there are much more elements of music..than in PF..Phropets of War...I do not have a words....something Godness...people in it...I do not words...and Grand Final..The Ministry of Lost Souls and ITPoE 2...you must listen to it...I can not write about it...The BEST music I have ever heard..there is all...heavy..melody..epic..I am crying..laughing..an about it is Systematic Chaos...NOT only about music...BUT about US...our World...bad World...We are going to the end...SCH is very heavy album to our minds...to US...

These two reviews don't say anything about the actual album, and the third doesn't say much either:
