So hair metal has some good?  Then it is fair to say all genres do.  Yes. Yes I think so.

I voted for gansta rap. Rap as a whole sucks. I'll give slack to old school rap, but most modern rap sucks. All the people do is brag about themselves and there's no originality in rap. And the fans only listen to rap because of the beats. Also, all they sing about is how much booty they get or how much they're able to give. Either that or being a gangster. That's literally accurate.

Reasons why they hate rock:

"That guitar is annoying."

"It's too long."

Those are two very stupid reasons to hate rock. i know ome rap fans that are too close minded to admit that some rock they have heard is really talented. Rap does not really take much talent to create, so that's one reason why it sucks. Also, why is so much rap making the radio? Bands hat are really talented (to name a few: Dream Theater, The Mars Volta) are getting really underrecognized and the mainstream person prefers rap over them. That's totally close-minded. Rap needs to end. I'm teven thinking about starting a Myspace group against rap.

To get started I like Prog, rap, fusion, straight-up rock, country, bluegrass, Broadway show tunes, whatever.  In rap as in all genres (including Prog) you have the very good and you have the very bad.  Rap needs to end? Now what's more closed-minded than a statement like that.  why is so much rap making the radio?  Simple, Rap sells and Dream Theater & The Mars Volta don't (at least not in the commercially profitable sense of the "Top 100").  That's not saying that Dream Theater sucks, they clearly don't.  In fact IMO it's almost a badge of honor that many groups today are not played on the "one-hit wonder", "here today gone tomorrow" world of today's commercial radio.  Reasons why they hate rock: first who are they and who said becuase guitar is annoying.  Rap and rock from the earliest days have almost had a symbiotic releation.  One of theearliest known "Rap hits' sampled and acknowledged Kraftwerk's "Trans Europe Express" on their song.  Other associations are well known also, Aerosmith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc.  So if you and others don't like rap that's cool, everybody's entitled to their opinion but let's keep the facts real when making negative comments, OK.Thumbs%20Up

Gangsta Rap - Of course this is the "suckiest". specially nowadays when there isn't even a social message but songs about cars, bitches and golden teeth..ugh...

Disco - I'm not so contrary to modern disco...Embarrassed.. though I hate discos, the place.

Mainstream Country crossover - atrocious....

Classic rock reunions - I don't care for them... until Waters reunites with Gilmour or Genesis reunites or Jim Morrison comes back from the Baco's Hell, I don't care about VAnHAlens nor Polices nor Menudos nor Garibaldis nor nothing...

Punk - SUCKS SO MUCH.. yes, I can't stand a single band...

The hair 80's resurgence.. well, it would suck if it would be REAL... where is it? Confused

I would like to say something about punk though.  It sucks.  Just because rock music seemed unaccessable at the time of the birth of punk, doesn't mean that it should be accessable.

Disco is cool.  I don't like it, but I do respect it.

It can be called music because it IS music.  Many rappers play with a live band, others have a DJ.  A DJ is just as much a musician as a guitarist, drummer, etc.  Robots are not taking over the world.  Humans are using robots to produce things quickly.  This can be good and bad.  Good because you can get exactly what you want for half the cost.  Bad because it eliminates the human element and it could be said that it promotes getting a robot to do a human's job.  However, here you are writing on a computer instead of speaking publicly with others.  Where do you think most music is recorded?  Hardly on analog machines anymore, but those were still technically robots.

Human emotion from music is subjective and can be felt depending on the listener.  I've heard plenty of people play an instrument and felt absolutely nothing significant.  I've heard pieces composed and played back on a computer and felt something.  It all depends.  Do no forget that even though the sound is from a machine it is still created by a person.  The machine is not on auto-compose.

You seem to have your history of rock and roll mixed up too.  Punk WAS the unaccessible music made in revolt to the overly accessibly and generally awful music of arena rock like Journey, REO Speedwagon, etc, etc.  It does not suck.

Its funny to read complaints about how people are closed minded to Progressive rock while a good majority of people here just whine about how every non-rock/prog-rock genre sucks.  Can't we all just get along?  Why not do a day of trade?  All the punks and rappers can give the prog audience the wonders of Wire, the Clash, Gang of Four, Joy Division, the Damned, A Tribe Called Quest, the Roots, Afrika Bambaataa, Dj Shadow, Nas, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Cody Chesnutt, and so forth.  While the prog audiencce can give the punks and rappers a day of Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Magma, Frank Zappa, VDGG, Jethro Tull, Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc.

The idea of bragging about one's self stemmed from old school rap.  They wanted to show their ego.  Just like a bassist, guitarist, drummer, keyboard player might want to show their ego with a solo or interesting composition.  To show off a rapper with show all the different rhyme schemes and flows and (depending on the artist) the beat they could put together.  There is just as much originality in rap as in prog.  When it comes down to it no one is truly original, but you can at least tell the difference between a Yes song and a Boogie Down Production song, right?  While Yes fused rock with classical styles, BDP fused R&B with their life in New York, Reggae, and other influences.  I would say that is original to an extent (in both cases).   Fans like to listen to the words AND the beat just as you like to listen to the guitar solo and vocals (or so I would assume).

It is hardly literate to say all rappers rap about booty and being a gangster.  It is however generalized and applicable to a good amount of the artists that are an easy marketing and money making source for the business that produce the artist which can be heard on the radio.

Those reasons for hating prog  could easily be true.  Some people don't want to listen to guitar solos or long songs.  Some people like folk music, some people like classical music or jazz.  Some people don't like the sound of the guitar.  Its just as stupid to hate rap because you think they only rap about booty, people only like the beats and it doesn't take any talent to create.  Lets see how many people can write a good prog song and how many can write a good rap song.  A lot probably couldn't do either.

As I mentioned before don't speak about close-mindedness when you yourself are being close-minded.  The world revolves around two things.  The Sun and money.  How do you make money?  Well you could spend money on a good artist like the Mars Volta (who makes a decent amount of money) or a good artist like Common (who also makes a decent amount of money), or you could spend money on getting airplay for 50 cent or Nickleback and make 3 times the amount you'd make working with Mars Volta or Common.  Its about what the major labels and stations can sell easiest and at the most profit.

Don't like whats on the mainstream radio? Don't listen to it, or get satellite or listen to NPR.

I hope I don't come off too aggressive or picking on you and jalas.  You were the only two to really make a point of argument than people who just typed something along the lines of Rap sucks.  I also wanted to point things out, maybe it will help others understand or whatever.
