I agree on gangsta rap. To an extent, these styles might have something good in them sometimes but gangsta rap seems to be the exception.
The genre is musically not interesting but the whole thing that comes with it (ideology, videos) is even worse. In fact, I just hate the gangsta's ideology. That's not even close to funny and intelligent.

There are always exceptions to the rule, but I guess we are generalizing. I see no overall redeeming qualities in Gangsta Rap. Most of it could be concieved, and recorded in less than a day. Not much talent needed.
I also think that the resurgence of the hair bands is pretty sad. But, there is at least some writing of music, and playing of instruments involved there.

Atleast country supports good morals, well, to a larger extent than "ganster rap" atleast. If I had to choose which is better to encourage in music, between drinking, (country), or getting high from illegal drugs, (rap), I'd choose country since atleast getting drunk is legal, though it shouldn't be.
But I do dislike it just as much as rap, musically.

(Gangsta) Rap and Hip-Hop (IMO) suck big-time. All other genres mentioned have at least something musical in them (some very little though), but with the ones (I cannot get me to type that two times, that's how much I loathe them) When I hear a "song" of these genres on the radio I switch to another channel immediately.
Disgusting stuff.

Bach, although a great singer, is a self-centered diva. We shouldn't

I agree. I get annoyed when alot of rappers say that even though they cuss and glorify violence and degrade women in their 'songs' that they are actually sending a "positive" message in that they are just talking about their experiences. They dont get it that when a 10 year old kid thinks its "fly" to be a gangsta and pack a gun they use this so-called music as their soundtrack.

That's the thing: potencial. Several genres have no one trying to be creative (some disco, punk, and grunge band attempt to be creative and succeed). Rap is all the same, except for a few novelty songs that still suck.
Remember: just because something has potencial, it still can suck huge lollipops.

Well, "gangsta rap" by it's modern definition is terrrible. I mean, if you can write about problems in your society and your environment, and do it well, then do it! But don't do it by having naked women randomly cavorting around you whilst proclaiming that you're great that you live in the environment, indirectly selling the environment to suburban white people with little to no taste in music that want to belong to a clique

Interesting... it seems that some (all?) places have their own 'pop', completely unknown outside its country/cultural area of origin, somewhat alternative to mainstream pop, but, on the whole, even less ambitious. The Polish example would be 'disco polo'.
BTW, how widespread or popular is reggaeton? South America only, or South America + Central America/the Caribbean + Latin American communities in the U.S.?

Hmm...I'd say crossover. It was between crossover and gangsta rap, and here's why the crossover gets the finger. Crossover country is a complete b*****dization of country music, a genre that has seen its fair share of good music. Crossover has forced me to implement a special rule for country: if it wasn't made before I was born, it's probably not worth it.
Gangsta rap is a b*****dization of rap, a genre I have found very little value in.
So, since crossover country (aka southern pop) devalues a genre I see more value in than Gangsta Rap does,

Doesn't this belong in the "organ solos" thread?

I've always wanted to to hire a female gardener to decorate my music room. Nothing better than tulips on my organ to brighten the room.

^ Yes, those were the days, kids, when ol' Dan was a regular here, and we had these sorts of highbrow, inspiring, deep philosophical discussions all of the time.
Sigh.

I really don't like it, but it's pretty darned harmless compared to the worst gangsta rap, the metal that glorifies pain & death, etc, and the angry, woman-hating lyrics I so often hear on the radio these days.
Well it ain't no surprise That you'd turn me on and leave It ain't no surprise That you'd turn it around on me I don't know why You won't give me what I need It ain't no surprise That that bitch is leavin' me That that bitch is leavin' me
Yep, she's just another one of your possessions -- there only to please you -- or to be killed when she no longer does so:
I like your pants around your feet I like the dirt that's on your knees And I like the way you still say please While you're looking up at me You're like my favourite damn disease
And I love the way you pass the check And I love the good times that you wreck And I love your lack of self respect While you're passed out on the deck I love my hands around your neck
Sick.

How can rap even be called music? you can call it poetry all you want (hmm), but Music is definately not what it is. Music should be played by people. It gives a real sense of human emotion when music is done manually. Preprogrammed beats is just more evidence of how robots are taking over the world.
I would like to say something about punk though. It sucks. Just because rock music seemed unaccessable at the time of the birth of punk, doesn't mean that it should be accessable.
Disco is cool. I don't like it, but I do respect it.

Well, Nickelback suck and write the same song 30 times with different titles, and every time everyone seems to be fooled
As far as rap/electronic beats:
I don't see rap as music. Rather, it is talking OVER music. The background beat, although usually very simplistic, DOES qualify as music, however, the actual "rapping" is nothing more than talking, although occasionally on beat (though much less so these days ....seriously they sound drunk half the time) As far as electronic music, well, we have electronic prog don't we? I mean, of course thats far, far different than the beats we're discussing, but the point is, music can be made from electronics, many bands are implementing them into their music nowadays. Techno and other elctronic dance genres can also be suprisingly musical

As far as rapping being just talking is concerned - in some cases this is true, but there are enough highly accomplished non-rap musicians out there (like Anthony Braxton or Steve Coleman) who will disagree with you on that.
