Old suggestion. Nevertheless donn't accept.  That it is what much incredible.  Also because, to my warning, it is Prog!!! And, at any case, the Prog is also experimental music.  And it is not produced, perhaps, experimental music?

sorry, I'm totally confused.

DON'T accept, because, to a warning!, it IS incredible, prog experimental-like and, it IS prog?! Wacko

can I get a mandrakerootian-English translation of that? Wink

In truth I have only an Italian compilation that is very interesting. Nevertheless memory of to have read an article that checked their in an encyclopedia of the Rock (an of the a lot of the beginnings of 90's with MC, LP or CD cited that every week my brother bought and that it the true Prog make discover me). Uhm...  You excuse if I profit of this space but...  In PA is lacking Manfred Mann (60's production) that, to my warning, it was more Prog than with the Manfred Mann's Earth Band!!!

Ehm... I had written a thread and I have been answered that... She isn't Prog because Experimental Music does not mean Prog.  For me it means Prog...  Or better Prog Related.

Well I do want her for Prog-Related, for the Pop-Prog obscure generousity that we can find in ourselves, for an Experimentalism in word play, vocal art or plain music sketch that isn't THE ESSENCE OF PROG, but can nonetheless be PROGressive...and for the fact that she looks like a complete artist, rarely fooling around with music of a subtle sunken kind. Wink

really, I have a feeling that, by when I return and end with my work outside the forum, I'll forward a nice and adequate portofolio of this artist, towards the "Prog Related Team", as to sense her eligible point of a progressiveness in a hint of nothing fancy, everything modish and artish. Smile

Thumbs%20Down I still don't like the category (not that I think it really IS a valid "category").

It seems to be a bit of a catch-all, almost a ghetto, and it seems to be largely about popularity, and favouring certain types of music over others.

If it means "other bands prog fans (which type of prog fans?) might like, then just about anything can be included.

If it means "artists at the cutting edges of their respective genres," then where are all of those artists who are broadening the boundaries of genres like reggae, jazz, country, folk, rap, etc?

(Where are Wilco? Sting? Lounge Lizards? etc. etc!)

If it means "sounds sort of like prog, at times," then what sort of prog does it sound like? To my ears, almost all classic rock shares significant elements with classic prog, and perhaps all metal shares elements with prog metal (or is that vice-versa?)

I see it as a contentious can of worms, that would have been better left unopened, or at least limited to a mere (expanding) list, without full artist inclusion (thus no reviews).

^^ of course it's not a category. It's a collection of bands which have been deemed worthy to be included here ... for various reasons. "bands prog fans might like", "at cutting edge of their genre", "sounds like prog" ... those are some of the criteria. But they're highly subjective, and so are the decisions about which bands get added as prog related and which ones get rejected. And that's ok ... with criteria as "fuzzy" as that, I think it's best to hear as many opinions as possible and then simply make a decision ... it will always seem unfair to many people. You can't please everyone ... Tongue

I think the most important thing to realise is this: "Prog Related" is not a priority ... it is a nice "gimmick" which has been introduced mainly because it brings more visitors to this website (ironically I don't think that this website would have made it to #1 website on Google for "progressive rock" if not for the extra popularity gained for listing bands like Queen or Deep Purple).

My suggestion: You don't like Prog Related? Ignore it. You don't like Prog Metal? Ignore it. You don't like Krautrock? Ignore it.

Focus on the things you *like* and have a good time!

Just my opinion, as always. Smile

I don't think he or anyone needs to ignore anything. Discussion is what forums are about, and discussing the pros and cons of Prog Related is part of that.

^ of course many of us come here for arguments ... I *love* a good argument. I just think that nobody should take any of this so seriously that it distracts them from the music they enjoy ... that's what I meant with "ignore it".

Well Michael...I can't speak for Peter, but I'm pretty sure that any discussion here or difference of opinion does not affect his enjoyment of the music that he likes.

Yes, it is quite good, Mike, and timlier now than ever, no?Thumbs%20Up

BTW, all, just for the record, re my use of Recycled as an avatar: it's not my "favourite" album or anything (I don't have one, but many), nor are Nektar my "favourite" prog band (ditto). I really like the album, really like the far-out artwork, and I wanted a bright avatar that stands out from the pack, even at a glance.
*********************************************************************************************

Re the larger topic at hand, I agree with pretty much all that you wrote, above. We are free to seek or pay attention to what we like here, and ignore the rest. There's something for everyone! I don't lose any sleep over the PR category or its various contentious inclusions, but it does seem to bring down more than its share of wrath and misunderstanding upon the forum. Numerous front-page reviews of PR bands like Zeppelin, Purple, etc, can also give the wrong impression of the site, to the casual or first-time observer.

I just wonder if this "gimmick," this "lure for the unwary," was really worth all the negativity that gathers around it, in the end. Ermm

But that's not for me to decide (whew!), and as you (and Aesop) said, you'll never please everyone, all of the time, so it's honestly no big deal to me.

I just enjoy a good, meaty discussion/argument about the nature of art every now and then, and this topic rates.

It's certainly a darned-sight more interesting than "What Song Are You listening to Now/ What about now? NOW? How About... NOW?" LOL

(Gawd, the continued popularity of such lists from strangers, without any illuminating commentary at all, astounds me!)Confused  I'd rather talk about taking a pee -- wait... I did! Embarrassed
