Maybe he is Hammills friend or like his lyrics or music, but I can't hear any influences.

That's the thing about Hammill. Even he has said that his "influence" on other artists most often isn't in the actual sound of the music/vocals. It's more his non-linear approach to making music that they all admire and are influenced by. He's one of those rare artists that if you put all of his admirers in a room, many would probably have nothing in common musically (as far as the sound of it, etc). Marc Almond doesn't have much in common with Bruce Dickinson, Julian Cope doesn't have much in common with Fish, etc. But they all try to take a sideways approach to their respective genres (Marc Almond performs atypical love songs, Julian Cope was doing off-the-wall pop with the Teardrops, etc).
 
It was Johnny Rotten, a friend of Bowie's, who stated that Bowie "got a lot from that geezer [Hammill]" on Capital Radio as far back as '77.
 
In an interview I did with Judge Smith years ago (which has been on the VdGG website for some time and still is), Judge told me that he remembers dropping by the 'H to He' recording sessions (1970) at Trident Studios and Bowie was hanging out with VdGG during the making of that album. Doesn't "prove" he influenced, but he was definitely aware of the unique/off-the-wall stuff they were doing (which would have undoubtedly appealed to DB, especially as not too many people were making music like VdGG in '70)

rush , mostly because of geddy lees bass playing, vocals, and peart. Farewell and moving are also both great albums, and lifeson has some great solos.

Well, today, after listening to Pawn Hearts, World Record, The LEast We can Do is wave to each other 7-8 times & giving Godbluff, Aerosol grey Machine & Still Life a listen ( Lps I borrowed, thankfully) I can now state that "subjectively speaking", it's too bad that Hammill never got a band to match his lyrics. I've gone through them & found maybe 5-6 songs off them all, where the group comes alive. But mostly, it's organ driven, change chords on the changes, sometimes jazzy interludes, but never any captivating melody or song (in my opinion). So maybe Peter needed someone to write or collaborate on the music, cause I just kept hoping I was missing something; until I found out it was taking the time to listen to better albums ...

Yes, I hope that was clear. You may know from past posts that I don't really care for people who claim to make "objective" statements out of "subjective" opinions.
And as a caveat emptor, PA's top 100 lists does happen to include a few of VDGG's albums. So there are likely some intelligent people with good tastes that would disagree with me. Smile

I find Geddy's voice really annoying. I wish he wouldn't sing so much.
 
And Van Der Graaf creates some bizarre, eerie and ground-breaking music, which I find a lot more interesting.

Well both bands have ugly (sorry I must say different or special?) vocals. I have listened only Pawn Hearts from VDGG (which is great BTW) and almost every Rush album. People said that Mr. Peter Hammill is an awesome lyricist, Neil Peart also IMHO. Better musicians I don't know but almost every drummer cites Neil as inspiration. Same with bass players and Geddy Lee. Lifeson maybe is the less influential but we must recognize his chord lexicon (or sound?) as a great contribution to rock music.
 
Anyway my vote goes to RUSH. Ok maybe they are overrated

If I may be so bold as to re-phrase your last statement - In this poll, anyway, they are unfortunately (fo a RUSH fan) not "ratedover" VDGG.
That may just be that us Lifeson fans are still busy figuring out some of Alex's suspended, diminished, open etc .... chords to take the time to vote. Myself, I voted, but then, I've got 2112, Xanadu, & La Villa Strangiato et al pretty much "chorded" out. Now if only I could actually follow all of Alex's playing on Strangiato. Tongue
