I thought the idea of the proto-genres were that they weren't part of the genres they inspired. zep, thin lizzy, purple and so forth fit fine in it as far as I can see

They're using a heavy guitar sound on some albums, but as a band they're not much heavier than Spock's Beard.Smile And especially their early albums - which are considered to be their best - are Heavy Melodic Rock.
