Hogarth definitely is a love or hate man. for me it is hate. maybe he is technically a better singer than Fish, but he can't shine a candle to him because of his lack of expression. with Fish gone Marillion completely lost that little bit of interest I had in them (I was never a big fan though)

Peter Hammil.

The man only yells and whispers. That's not singing. Yet somehow it fits perfectly with the music he and VDGG play.

at the stage this thing is.. I'd put Peter Gabriel on the list, he's not exactly an opera singer.

you know very little of Peter Hammill if you think he only yells and whispers. he can sing absolutely beautifully if needed. I recommend to listen to "This Side of the Looking Glass" from his album "Over", for example

Willie ..sometimes I DONT KNOW if when he seems crying is because he is laughing or making gargles but yeah is a good artist

I voted other with the great Tom Waits in mind. Love the poetic phrasings and the music always gets me, but the smoke and alcohol driven voice is not my cup of tea in this case.

I disagree about expressionless, but that's a matter of preference in styles IMO.

This post is accurate, Fish is not as good a singer but a much better performer. Hogarth regardless has no business in this thread because even you agree that he is better technically and that is what the poll indicates.

Why I disagree with the Hogarth emotion comment:
I think Hogarth era Marillion is much more emotional than Fish era, and one reason I like Hogarth so much. Fish era = better musicianship and performance Hogarth era = lack of interest in musicianship and more on style and emotion. Brave is the best example of this with a very wide range of emotions throughout the album. From suicidal depression to anger and back to sadness and an ending of hope. Other examples of Hogarth era emotion include: Ocean Cloud, This Strange Engine, Memory of Water, The Invisible Man, and The Party.

Pretty silly comment, IMO Hammill sings like he invented the voice. Check out some more Hammill if you disagree, maybe the song House with no Door, that one gets me every time.

I am quite familiar with Hammil, I know a lot (not all) of his work both solo and with VDGG, seen him live and spoke to him on one occasion last year.
I think it was pretty obvious my overstatement when saying he "only" screams and whispers. Yet I do not change my opinion, he conveys plenty of emotion but has a dreadful tone.
 
Still, I like him a lot.

"House with No Door" always makes me cry, especially the passage "it doesn't seem right when there's that little dark figure running -. won't somebody help me".

As a Queen's fanboy, I have to vote for Brian May.  I like his voice a lot, though.

And a little blasphemy: Ian Anderson. Let's admit he's no Pavarotti. But he sings from his testicles.
