It's fine in moderation. Too much can be a bad thing though.

we hit the dark rooms at the dying of the light
and for developments await the day beginning with the coming of the night i take my breakfast at eight p.m. i list the promises i've given to myself the world's at fourty degrees messages in bottles wait upon the bar-room shelf i count them off in twos and threes there's something ironic in unspoken jest my nerves take a tonic and the world takes the rest alcohol is an ambulance, a fighting ship alcohol gives the hand that shakes a steady grip alcohol is the scorpion in a lucky dip alcohol, alcohol i wall my thoughts up with a plaster skim like chewing gum they all congeal through glasses, darkly, i observe that's me that's him some kind of skeleton is hazily revealed... nothing's the matter nothing has changed i'm mad as a hatter but feeling no pain alcohol is the angel's kiss upon your lips alcohol is the sorceror's apprenticeship alcohol is the parachute that never rips alcohol is the jacket that you can't unzip alcohol is the searchlight and a neon strip alcohol is the answer at your fingertips alcohol - the casino where you cash your chips alcohol, alcohol, alcohol alcohol is an ambulance, a fighting ship alcohol gives the hand that shakes a steady grip alcohol is the scorpion in a lucky dip alcohol is the jacket that you can't unzip alcohol is the searchlight and a neon strip alcohol is the answer at your fingertips alcohol - the casino where you cash your chips alcohol, alcohol, alcohol alcohol is the angel's kiss upon your lips alcohol is the sorceror's apprenticeship alcohol is the parachute that never rips alcohol is the jacket that you can't unzip alcohol is the searchlight and a neon strip alcohol is the answer at your fingertips alcohol - the casino where you cash your chips alcohol, alcohol, alcohol |

Prohibition doesn't work. As long as people seek a mental escape, they will find one. Sure alcohol will not cause problems in moderation, but it doesn't benefit you at all either. Let's face it, the stuff is poison. You don't need it as part of your diet, and the dangers are all too apparent.
One thing that bothers me is the different attitude society has with alcohol. It's just as dangerous as any other drug (even more than some). Best idea is to avoid any potentially harmful substances. We have a hard enough time trying to see things clearly without being intoxicated. If you feel you need something to take the 'edge' off, try to find out why that is. Don't treat the symptom, find the cause. I know a bit about this, having been in the grips of alcoholism for the better part of 15 years. |

Once in awhile ain't bad, esp. if its only a social thing. No need for this getting drunk every night thing.
And yes, this is a college student saying that.

I don't like alcohol. I mean, I actually don't like the taste. I've only drank like ten times in my 28 years, always with the same friends and always in a music-conversation setting, usually till one of us is wasted. I'd say then that I use it as a ritual. I hate it elsewhere, I don't understand how it could be legal and the green oregano stuff isn't... Hipocresies and marketing needs of society... Alcohol isn't necessary in your life. It's good every once in a while and in an appropiate setting, but not as a requirement for having fun.

I don't like the taste, either. It tastes, well, chemical, and it smells chemical. Why would I drink something that is somewhat poisonous and smells and tastes like it, too? So I can definitely listen to prog without alcohol--I've never listened to prog with alcohol. |

i only drink dry red wine, and no more than one glass a day. that's pure healt - from what i know it helps the blood to be more fluid and helps the regeneration of red blood cells, but much more visible is the great effect it has on digestion - in the case of drinking a glass both before and after eating.
sometimes getting drunk is just as effective as a psychotherapy session. i know this from experience, but i'm not sure about advocating it. Edited by andu - February 11 2007 at 06:04 |

Well, it seems to go against the consensus, but I'll chip in to say that I like booze (both flavour and effects). Clearly it can and does cause problems for people who become addicted for whatever reason (I am not sure about the notion of an addictive personality) or who have the need to use it as a crutch, but for the vast majority there's no difficulty. It can be very pleasant to have wine with a meal, to go for a few drinks with friends, and once in a while even to get drunk. I would agree that there is a degree of hypocrisy in the prohibition of cannabis and certain other drugs whilst alcohol is legal. The correct answer in my view would be more legalisation, not more prohibition. Not a realistic political prospect in the UK or I suspect in the US, however.Edited by Mascodagama - February 11 2007 at 07:58 |

I drink in moderation. I have a couple pints of cider on a saturday because I like the taste of the stuff, not because its going to get me drunk, something which I try to avoid as its especially bad to get wasted on cider.
Personally I fail to see the point, or fun, in going out and drinking as much as possible as often as possible, its just a recipie for an early grave. |

I find that after work alcohol relaxes me and makes me more emotionally responsive to music. It's OK to do once in awhile, but I think it's a bad habit to associate your music listening time with alcohol every day. For me 2-3 times per week, a glass of wine or scotch is a beautiful thing. But you have to moderate it. Cheers!

moderation is key!
unfortunately, most kids my age have never looked up the word 'moderation' in the dictinoary, so they they spend their weekends being totally wasted. But hey, my sister told me a few wise words the other day. It went something along the lines of this: 'You have to realize this, Magnus: All people are idiots! At least until they have proven the opposite. And to be able to be around these idiots, you need to be "slightly" intoxicated to bear their presence, until they have presented the evidence which is supposed to make them non-idiots". And that, considering all the idiots I see and meet every single day, is a VERY good reason not to be moderate when it comes to drinking alcohol |
