I've decided to add some percussion to my instrument collection but I'm not sure whether to get a small (14") gong or some bongos. Confused

Has anyone here owned/played both of these and if so which would you recommend?

Thanks in advance

All I've got w.r.t. percussion is a small (9") djembe. If I had to choose in your case, I'd say go for the bongo's. The Djembe allows me to play along with some of my music, but the hembra and macho of a set of bongo's allow you to add more melody to your rhytmic play. A single gong doesn't mean much to me, unless you want to integrate it into a small version of Neil Pearts drum & percussion rig?

Yes I do own a theremin, it's only a simple one which only allows control of pitch rather than pitch and volume but it makes all the right noises. I think every musician should own one simply to freak other people out. Wink

Way to go! In that case, my advice is changed: get the gong, it's easier to combine with the theremin when playing in parallel. Post a few samples once you got it going!

I would if I had anyway to record the inevitable unholy racket but I don't Disapprove

However I may be able to convince someone to hang around long enough to take a photo of me using both but that's unlikely. Wink

EDIT: just ordered a 14" gong with stand Big smile

It will anything metal near a theremin will send the theremin mad if it hasn't been tuned to compensate for the metal
