I've decided to add some percussion to my instrument collection but I'm not sure whether to get a small (14") gong or some bongos.
Has anyone here owned/played both of these and if so which would you recommend?
Thanks in advance

All I've got w.r.t. percussion is a small (9") djembe. If I had to choose in your case, I'd say go for the bongo's. The Djembe allows me to play along with some of my music, but the hembra and macho of a set of bongo's allow you to add more melody to your rhytmic play. A single gong doesn't mean much to me, unless you want to integrate it into a small version of Neil Pearts drum & percussion rig?

I was thinking along the lines of Theremin based weirdness in combination with some berserk Gong playing

Sounds great - and puts in place the gong as well.
You actually own a theremin?

Yes I do own a theremin, it's only a simple one which only allows control of pitch rather than pitch and volume but it makes all the right noises. I think every musician should own one simply to freak other people out.

Way to go! In that case, my advice is changed: get the gong, it's easier to combine with the theremin when playing in parallel. Post a few samples once you got it going!

I would if I had anyway to record the inevitable unholy racket but I don't
However I may be able to convince someone to hang around long enough to take a photo of me using both but that's unlikely.
EDIT: just ordered a 14" gong with stand

It will anything metal near a theremin will send the theremin mad if it hasn't been tuned to compensate for the metal

I first read the title of this thread as "Gong or Bongs"
...and was thinking "surely these go together"...

Apologies for the bump but the gong still hasn't arrived, I think I'm going to have to ring the company that sold it to me to make sure they're not screwing me out of £60.
In related news I've ordered a lapsteel guitar and wah pedal (given some money by grand parents).

Use the lap steel with the wah! It would sound awsome!

The obvious thing to do is mic the gong, then put the output through the wah. While randomly and violently shaking both hands near the theremin, of course.

ah but I may not get a gong (depends on result of a phone call this morning) and my amp can only have one instrument plugged in at any one time, I really need to get a small mixer.

^You could record the wah'ed gong with a taperecorder or something, and
play the tape while randomly shaking your hands around the theremin.
That way you can have your cake and eat it.

I don't have anyway of recording
Anyway I tried to phone the company I bought the gong from and no one answered the phone so I'm going to give them another go tomorrow.

With a small mixer, you could put the outputs of the theremin, mic'd gong, and slide guitar ALL through the wah at the same time! You'll make more random noise than the M00dy N00bs and Decapitated Walrus combined! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

The problem then is trying to play all 3, I'd need to play the guitar with my feet

That reminds me of what Neil Peart once said about Geddy Lee:
"He's amazing, he plays bass with his right hand keyboads with his left, he sings, and plays bass paddles with his feet. He's only got one limb left and I don't want to know what he plays with that...."

Ah but my foot won't produce as good a noise as the proper beater and I'd have to use my head to play the theremin

You tape the beater to your foot.
And playing Theremin with your head would be so kickass!

I do actually play the theremin with my head on occasions but after a while I get a headache.
