My vote goes to 'Selling England...', no matter how hard Rutehrford and Collins tried to sabotage its brilliance with More Fool Me (with a wiser arrangement, it would have fit better in 'And Then There Were Three'). 'Selling England...' contains two of my top 5 Genesis tracks: Dancing and Firth, as well as my fave instrumental, After the Ordeal.

Phil never sabotaged anything. Genesis started sounding decently when he arrived, and I could hardly call the charming "More Fool Me" the worst song on the album ("The Battle of Epping Forest" hysteria is a better candidate, but no the only one).
Said that, NOTHING in "Selling..." comes close to masterpieces like "Dance On a Volcano" or "One for the Vine".
...Or "Mama", or "The Brazilian", or "Home by the Sea", or "Domino", or "Duke's Travels", or "Tonight, tonight, Tonight"... Why do you leave these masterpieces out of the poll? They did great - if not better - without Gabril an Hackett.

Trick of the Tail is my favourite..
For me its one of the best rock albums ever recorded. It cant be faulted. The playing is superb, the production is supurb, even the packaging is mysterious and timeless.
Had I been following Genesis through the Gabriel years I would have believed it impossible for them to better 'Selling England..' or 'The Lamb..' but with Trick they did.

Woohoo, "Trick" is getting the love it deserves :)
There's individual songs from the other albums I like, and I wouldn't hesitate to go with "Lamb" if only Gabriel had worked on the lyrics a little harder.
Kinda surprising no one went for "Trespass" though- I like it as much as the next three.

"Phil never sabotaged anything. Genesis started sounding decently when he arrived..."
Let me put this clear: I meant the song and the performance by these two guys at this moment of the album, not Phil's labour per se (where did I mention that Collins sabotaged Genesis?, where?, tell me). He is one of the most brilliant and exciting drummers ever in the prog genre, and as Rutherford has shown before and after 'More Fool Me', he was capable of writing more impressive acoustic stuff than that ('White Mountain', 'Harlequin', 'Ripples', 'Your Own Special Way', his early collaborations with Anthony Phillips).
Let's put other people's words in the right perspective, OK?

Indeed, Suppers Ready is a great work. Foxtrot has some great moments, one of those is 'Can utility and the coastliners' Its not talked about very much, but its a song that I think they should have kept in their live set for many years after PG left. It blends drama and eccentricity perfectly, and would not have sounded out of place on one of their later albums.

The Lamb is my favourite by a long way because it meant so much to me at that time and for a considerable time thereafter. The first five albums all have gems and magnificent prog innovations.I loved Trick and played it it for a long time.Wind and Wuthering was the start of their decline in my eyes albeit it still had some very strong songs but the magic was waning. Then Hackett left and We had and 'Then there were three' keyboards filling in where the lead guitar should be.And Phil taking them into Rock/Pop world.Yes there were still a few maseratis flung in but for me it was over.Gabriel's Genesis is Genesis. Some of those songs mentioned above as being better than the Gabriel'hackett era is mind bongling.Phil Collins great drummer, he became Genesis's pied piper.

Strangely being an EARLY GENESIS fan I never noticed this thread before but now I noticed I'm in a big trouble, which album is my favorite:
Trespass is amazing, dark mysterious intelligent and incredibly advanced for the year of it's release and a bunch of very young fellows, but still the band had much more to offer.
Nursery Cryme has the best track in Genesis career (Musical Box) and a close second place with Fountain of Salmacis, but the plain For Absent Friends is a very low point.
Foxtrot has no fillers the best epic ever released and a wonderful and underrated song as Can-Utility and the Coastliners, but none of this excelent tracks is in the level of Musical Box.
Selling England by the Pound is my less favorite album of Gabriel era (Not counting From Genesis to the Revelation of course), too simple for my taste, and any album that has such a waste of space as More Fool Me doesn't deserve to be considered the best Genesis album (IMHO of course).
The Lamb is probably the most important album of Genesis because it's an icopn of the prog' genre but not my favorite either.
A Trick Of The Tail leaves me cold, a good album but too simple. Genesis without Gabriel (but with Hackett of course) was still great but not the same, part of the magic had left with Peter.
Wind & Wuthering is much better than ATOTT but I can't resist Phil Collins voice, the guy is simply boring in vocals.
Of course I can't care less for any later album, I don't like POP.
So I'll vote for NURSERY CRYME.

Funny, I read the same words in Rolling Stones and Blender, two magazines that bash Progressive rock, never imagined reading this in a progressive forum, but everyone is entitled to an opinion.
Iván
PS: But.......being strictly accurate, Phil Collins arrived before Nursery Cryme.

Tricky one, I said foxtrot, because it was the one I heard on the other side of my Dad's tape of Aqualung, and when i discovered Genesis in general.

I believe all that genesis released up until The Lamb... was a masterful piece of work. Why? because at that point they had two of the best musicians in the prog scene: Peter Gabriel on vocals, and Phil Collins on drums. Sure, Phil is a decent singer, but he is much more valuable on the kit! Therefore, the latter records, to my ear, seem to miss something valuable.

Is it my imagination or is Hacket a lot quieter on the CD versions of ATOTT and WAW than on Vinyl?
And why isn't the brilliant Genesis Live in the poll? You've included Second's Out (where they made no secret of bringing Hacket down in the mix - he walked out when he couldn't stand to hear Squonk over and over again!)!
I voted for Foxtrot - the reproduction isn't great, and Supper's Ready has a bit where the guitars were out of tune and the tape speed had to be adjusted (listen carefully), but it's about the songs - and apart from all their other stuff there's nothing to compare to it.

This seems as two sides of the same coin, It's evident that when Steve left Genesis, Phil and his session musicians (aka Genesis) didn't wanted to release a live album where Steve could be the star, so they decided to mutilate almost all the Steve guitar sections, mixing this parts so low that are almost not audiblefor any 2 legs being with normal ears.
In the case of the CD's, I don't know for sure, but it's posible the three members did the same thing.
Genesis Live 73 was by far the best album recorded on stage until Archives 1 was released, because Seconds Out has no value after the criminal mutilation and Three Sides Live has only one barely decent side in the UK edition, because the USA edition with a fourth studio side is just crap.

Selling England and Foxtrot have really sorted themselves as the
consensus faves...been listening to Selling since '78, what a really
great album, it really says something when you still pull it out
regularly after all those years....'Paper Late, Cries a voice in the
crowd....mmmmm..old man dies..'
