Hear hear, Mattjam! I think I'll follow the same principle, and vote for something less obvious. Kudos to Gonghobbit for coming up with the poll in the first place (this is better than my Bruford poll! ), and for giving us such essential Genesis choices! Great music either way you look at it -- we can't lose! ![Thumbs Up](https://www.progarchives.com/forums/smileys/smiley20.gif)

Again this is a hard poll for me to vote. There is only one album in the list that I don't consider a truly great one and I think that that one is very very good.
So: Foxtrot by a hair.

Very cool someone likes Wind and Wuthering best, I totally love that one too, One for the Vine and Blood on the Rooftops are two of my very favorites by them.

Ahhh, very close decision, but I've always thought "Dancing with the moonlit knight", "Cinema Show" and "Firth of fith" were just too good to improve on...
They were what made the difference between Selling England and every other album... ![](smileys/smiley1.gif)

I was the one who voted Wind and Wuthering. It's true that 'Sellin England', for example, could be considered a better album overall, but this is 'favourite' album poll, and I just love the mood of 'Wind' and 'A Trick of'. 'Blood on the Rooftops' is one of my all time favourite songs (I recommend 'Strutton Ground' from Hackett's last CD as a similar song in mood). The cover is also my all time favourite (and one of my favourite drawins period).

I agree with Paco's reasoning - 'Selling England' is probably their "best" album, but I just love the feel of 'Nursery Cryme'; I defy anyone not to melt at the opening to 'Fountain Of Salmacis'

Well Fountain of Salamacis (or is it Salmacis?) is a very good song... It's got an Iron Maiden feel to it, or that's what I think for some reason, and Nursery Cryme is a very good album...
The Musical Box is just awesome... Still my vote's been cast, and all I'm doing is talking up the other albums that don't quite measure up to Selling England by the Pound... ![](smileys/smiley1.gif)
Of course that's just my opinion... ![](smileys/smiley23.gif)

'A trick of the tail' is Genesis' best album, despite Peter Gabriel's absence on vocals. 'Foxtrot' sounds very, very old, 'A trick of the tail' sounds fresh with sublime keyboard playing and Phil's best drumming. For me, the best Genesis record featuring Peter Gabriel would be to choose between 'Nursery cryme' and 'The lamb lies down on Broadway'.![](smileys/smiley4.gif)

I have also that same feeling with every Genesis record up to Foxtrot, 'Selling England' being a great turning point in sound quality and production. I think low quality production is dramatic in 'Tresspass', an album I really SHOULD like more than I do: hell, I am an Anthony Phillips fan!

Until a few years ago, I would have shunned the thought, but 'Trick of the Tail' is a damn solid album. If it weren't for 'Ripples', I'd probably rate it higher than some Gabriel-era albums. As it stands, however, I have to pick The Lamb; maybe just because I was weaned on it.

Definitively :
1 : Foxtrot (for Watcher of the Sky)
2 : The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (for the lenght and concept)
3 : Wind And Wuthering (for the presence of Steve Hackett)

Selling England looks like the people's choice so far...I love Nursery Cryme too, 'Harlequin', as relatively obscure and mellow as it is within their work, is one of my favorites. Too bad everybody didn't leave Phil, and form another band ![](smileys/smiley36.gif)

Agree with Paco. "Blood on the Rooftops" is amazing, and a good proof of how well could Phil deliver stunning melodies. Of course, his best singing was yet to come with "Duke". Still, I feel songs are more properly constructed on "Wind and Wuthering" than in the Gabriel-era albums (it is frustrating that such an amazing song like "Dancing with the Moonlight Knight" has such and abrupt and amateurish ending). But most important of it all: I love Tony Banks, and he never had more room to show his talent than in this record. "Eleventh Earl of Mar" or "One for the Vine" rank amongst Genesis finest moments. And, what the hell, I like "Your Own Special Way" as well.![](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif)

My vote goes to 'Selling England...', no matter how hard Rutehrford and Collins tried to sabotage its brilliance with More Fool Me (with a wiser arrangement, it would have fit better in 'And Then There Were Three'). 'Selling England...' contains two of my top 5 Genesis tracks: Dancing and Firth, as well as my fave instrumental, After the Ordeal.

Phil never sabotaged anything. Genesis started sounding decently when he arrived, and I could hardly call the charming "More Fool Me" the worst song on the album ("The Battle of Epping Forest" hysteria is a better candidate, but no the only one).
Said that, NOTHING in "Selling..." comes close to masterpieces like "Dance On a Volcano" or "One for the Vine".
...Or "Mama", or "The Brazilian", or "Home by the Sea", or "Domino", or "Duke's Travels", or "Tonight, tonight, Tonight"... Why do you leave these masterpieces out of the poll? They did great - if not better - without Gabril an Hackett.
TONY RULES!!!!!!

Trick of the Tail is my favourite..![](smileys/smiley32.gif)
For me its one of the best rock albums ever recorded. It cant be faulted. The playing is superb, the production is supurb, even the packaging is mysterious and timeless.
Had I been following Genesis through the Gabriel years I would have believed it impossible for them to better 'Selling England..' or 'The Lamb..' but with Trick they did.

Woohoo, "Trick" is getting the love it deserves :)
There's individual songs from the other albums I like, and I wouldn't hesitate to go with "Lamb" if only Gabriel had worked on the lyrics a little harder.
Kinda surprising no one went for "Trespass" though- I like it as much as the next three.

"Phil never sabotaged anything. Genesis started sounding decently when he arrived..."
Let me put this clear: I meant the song and the performance by these two guys at this moment of the album, not Phil's labour per se (where did I mention that Collins sabotaged Genesis?, where?, tell me). He is one of the most brilliant and exciting drummers ever in the prog genre, and as Rutherford has shown before and after 'More Fool Me', he was capable of writing more impressive acoustic stuff than that ('White Mountain', 'Harlequin', 'Ripples', 'Your Own Special Way', his early collaborations with Anthony Phillips).
Let's put other people's words in the right perspective, OK?

Indeed, Suppers Ready is a great work. Foxtrot has some great moments, one of those is 'Can utility and the coastliners' Its not talked about very much, but its a song that I think they should have kept in their live set for many years after PG left. It blends drama and eccentricity perfectly, and would not have sounded out of place on one of their later albums.

The Lamb is my favourite by a long way because it meant so much to me at that time and for a considerable time thereafter. The first five albums all have gems and magnificent prog innovations.I loved Trick and played it it for a long time.Wind and Wuthering was the start of their decline in my eyes albeit it still had some very strong songs but the magic was waning. Then Hackett left and We had and 'Then there were three' keyboards filling in where the lead guitar should be.And Phil taking them into Rock/Pop world.Yes there were still a few maseratis flung in but for me it was over.Gabriel's Genesis is Genesis. Some of those songs mentioned above as being better than the Gabriel'hackett era is mind bongling.Phil Collins great drummer, he became Genesis's pied piper.

Strangely being an EARLY GENESIS fan I never noticed this thread before but now I noticed I'm in a big trouble, which album is my favorite:
Trespass is amazing, dark mysterious intelligent and incredibly advanced for the year of it's release and a bunch of very young fellows, but still the band had much more to offer.
Nursery Cryme has the best track in Genesis career (Musical Box) and a close second place with Fountain of Salmacis, but the plain For Absent Friends is a very low point.
Foxtrot has no fillers the best epic ever released and a wonderful and underrated song as Can-Utility and the Coastliners, but none of this excelent tracks is in the level of Musical Box.
Selling England by the Pound is my less favorite album of Gabriel era (Not counting From Genesis to the Revelation of course), too simple for my taste, and any album that has such a waste of space as More Fool Me doesn't deserve to be considered the best Genesis album (IMHO of course).
The Lamb is probably the most important album of Genesis because it's an icopn of the prog' genre but not my favorite either.
A Trick Of The Tail leaves me cold, a good album but too simple. Genesis without Gabriel (but with Hackett of course) was still great but not the same, part of the magic had left with Peter.
Wind & Wuthering is much better than ATOTT but I can't resist Phil Collins voice, the guy is simply boring in vocals.
Of course I can't care less for any later album, I don't like POP.
So I'll vote for NURSERY CRYME.

I believe all that genesis released up until The Lamb... was a masterful piece of work. Why? because at that point they had two of the best musicians in the prog scene: Peter Gabriel on vocals, and Phil Collins on drums. Sure, Phil is a decent singer, but he is much more valuable on the kit! Therefore, the latter records, to my ear, seem to miss something valuable.

Is it my imagination or is Hacket a lot quieter on the CD versions of ATOTT and WAW than on Vinyl?
And why isn't the brilliant Genesis Live in the poll? You've included Second's Out (where they made no secret of bringing Hacket down in the mix - he walked out when he couldn't stand to hear Squonk over and over again!)!
I voted for Foxtrot - the reproduction isn't great, and Supper's Ready has a bit where the guitars were out of tune and the tape speed had to be adjusted (listen carefully), but it's about the songs - and apart from all their other stuff there's nothing to compare to it. ![](smileys/smiley2.gif)

This seems as two sides of the same coin, It's evident that when Steve left Genesis, Phil and his session musicians (aka Genesis) didn't wanted to release a live album where Steve could be the star, so they decided to mutilate almost all the Steve guitar sections, mixing this parts so low that are almost not audiblefor any 2 legs being with normal ears.
In the case of the CD's, I don't know for sure, but it's posible the three members did the same thing.
Genesis Live 73 was by far the best album recorded on stage until Archives 1 was released, because Seconds Out has no value after the criminal mutilation and Three Sides Live has only one barely decent side in the UK edition, because the USA edition with a fourth studio side is just crap.

No, they didn't, but unfortunately, 'More Fool Me' became part of SEBTP's repertoire. Just for the record, during the sessions of SEBTP, Gabriel had come up with an idea for a prog ballad which was to be called 'Deja Vu'. Hackett revisited and widened it for his 'Genesis Revisited' album - with lead vocals by Paul Carrack - making it an almost 6 minute song. Let me tell you it's, in my opinion, a fantastic ballad, melancholy, reflective, emotional: it would have made a hell of an entry for SEBTP, after the splendour of 'Firth of Fifth'. In turn, 'More Fool Me' could have replaced any ballad from the Duke-to-We Can't Dance era.
