Favorite Genesis album

Phil never sabotaged anything. Genesis started sounding decently when he arrived, and I could hardly call the charming "More Fool Me" the worst song on the album ("The Battle of Epping Forest" hysteria is a better candidate, but no the only one).

Said that, NOTHING in "Selling..." comes close to masterpieces like "Dance On a Volcano" or "One for the Vine".

...Or "Mama", or "The Brazilian", or "Home by the Sea", or "Domino", or "Duke's Travels", or "Tonight, tonight, Tonight"... Why do you leave these masterpieces out of the poll? They did great - if not better - without Gabril an Hackett.

There's individual songs from the other albums I like, and I wouldn't hesitate to go with "Lamb" if only Gabriel had worked on the lyrics a little harder.

Kinda surprising no one went for "Trespass" though- I like it as much as the next three.

Indeed, Suppers Ready is a great work. Foxtrot has some great moments, one of those is 'Can utility and the coastliners' Its not talked about very much, but its a song that I think they should have kept in their live set for many years after PG left. It blends drama and eccentricity perfectly, and would not have sounded out of place on one of their later albums.

the lamb however is superiour to all, but less accessible.

The Lamb is my favourite by a long way because it meant so much to me at that time and for a considerable time thereafter.The first five albums all have gems and magnificent prog innovations.I loved Trick and played it it for a long time.Wind and Wuthering was the start of their decline in my eyes albeit it still had some very strong songs but the magic was waning.Then Hackett left and We had and 'Then there were three' keyboards filling in where the lead guitar should be.And Phil taking them into Rock/Pop world.Yes there were still a few maseratis flung in but for me it was over.Gabriel's Genesis is Genesis.Some of those songs mentioned above as being better than the Gabriel'hackett era is mind bongling.Phil Collins great drummer, he became Genesis's pied piper.

Strangely being an EARLY GENESIS fan I never noticed this thread before but now I noticed I'm in a big trouble, which album is my favorite:

Trespass is amazing, dark mysterious intelligent and incredibly advanced for the year of it's release and a bunch of very young fellows, but still the band had much more to offer.

Nursery Cryme has the best track in Genesis career (Musical Box) and a close second place with Fountain of Salmacis, but the plain For Absent Friends is a very low point.

Foxtrot has no fillers the best epic ever released and a wonderful and underrated song as Can-Utility and the Coastliners, but none of this excelent tracks is in the level of Musical Box.

Selling England by the Pound is my less favorite album of Gabriel era (Not counting From Genesis to the Revelation of course), too simple for my taste, and any album that has such a waste of space as More Fool Me doesn't deserve to be considered the best Genesis album (IMHO of course).

The Lamb is probably the most important album of Genesis because it's an icopn of the prog' genre but not my favorite either.

A Trick Of The Tail leaves me cold, a good album but too simple. Genesis without Gabriel (but with Hackett of course) was still great but not the same, part of the magic had left with Peter.

Wind & Wuthering is much better than ATOTT but I can't resist Phil Collins voice, the guy is simply boring in vocals.

Of course I can't care less for any later album, I don't like POP.

So I'll vote for NURSERY CRYME.

Funny, I read the same words in Rolling Stones and Blender, two magazines that bash Progressive rock, never imagined reading this in a progressive forum, but everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Is it my imagination or is Hacket a lot quieter on the CD versions of ATOTT and WAW than on Vinyl?

And why isn't the brilliant Genesis Live in the poll?  You've included Second's Out (where they made no secret of bringing Hacket down in the mix - he walked out when he couldn't stand to hear Squonk over and over again!)! 

I voted for Foxtrot - the reproduction isn't great, and  Supper's Ready has a bit where the guitars were out of tune and the tape speed had to be adjusted (listen carefully), but it's about the songs - and apart from all their other stuff there's nothing to compare to it.
