Bruford for me. As much as I enjoy Neil's work as a drummer (especially his solos), I feel that Bill's work has more fluidity to it (perhaps his musical choices enable this).

I'd have to say Bruford because he's always been more exploratory, and has been more of an innovator.  And live, Peart basically just repeats what he does on the studio albums (Bruford doesn't resort to those self-imposed restrictions).  I'd also say that Peart's biggest strengths are outside of the drum department (i.e. his literary pursuits - reading, lyrics writing, book writing).  But Bruford tends to concentrate more overall of his time on the drums.  Bruford is more of a drummer's drummer, and a percussionist in the classic sense.  Peart's good too though.

After watching that I'm thoroughly convinced...that Peart's better. How was this supposed to change my mind?

I was JUST watching that video.  I was linked to it after watching the "Bruford and the Beat" videos on youtube (which I highly reccomend; it's short but insightful look into his mind).  That's really creepy.

However, it isn't fair to judge Bruford by that video.  That's a video of one of his many drum clinics; he isn't trying to do anything that's very interesting musically, but to show a watered-down, slow-motion look into his drumming for the education of young players interested in his technique.

That's understandable; but, in a poll such as this when Bruford needs to be sold to me we should've seen something a bit more mind blowing. Bruford is a great drummer, but Peart is just out of this world.

One thing about Peart, as much as I love him, is that he is unable to play other stuff.  There was a Buddy Rich tribute organized after Buddy's death, and Neil was invited to play on it.  He embarrassed himself so badly at the first rehearsal that he had to take LESSONS on jazz drumming before he could participate.

Meanwhile, Bruford can play anything; he has done everything from prog rock to jazz (Earthworks) to the complex rhythms of world music (World Drummers Ensemble).  He may not be a pretentious powerhouse behind the kit like Peart, but I far prefer his rhythmic complexity and amazing virtuosity and flexibility to Peart's ability to hit the toms real fast.

But, different strokes for different folks.

I think I had read in Modern Drummer that he had a hard time adjusting to the Buddy Rich tribute (the AV department in college had a couple of the videos and I'd watch them a lot...along with a Steve Gadd instructional video), but I thought he did a good job considering.

If you ever watch or listen to "The Rhythm Method" he blends all sorts of percussive styles into his solo. I realize it's all a 'hey, dig me' sort of thing, but Peart is simply the master. Different strokes, like you said. Excellent post, though.

Bruford for me, Peart is far to mechanical in his drumming for me. Bruford is much more experimental.

Glad someone appreciates my feeble attempts at poor taste dyslexic humour..........or did you?

Have to say my flippancy reflects my feelings about threads which invite us to recognise one artist as being more superior to the other when each may well be worthy in his own way. BRILL gets my vote nonetheless 'cause I've entered into the spirit of things at least.
