James;

Thanks for your informative post. The situation you describe reminds me of the UK in the 80's. An entire decade spent crippled under the tiranical reign of the Thatcherite junta controlled police state. And why? Because all opposition was too tied up with its own dogmatic pedantry to proffer an electable alternative. Although I can't really see the sense in the USA's "2 terms and you're out" rule, we could have certainly done with it in '87.

The two term limit serves some very important functions: the first term is for the president to trash his predecessor and plan his second term campaign, and the second term is to provide some kind of historical legacy and pass all sorts of nutty legislation (since they won't have to face the repercussions).

Imagine what Bush could do if he didn't have to worry about getting elected again...

Exactly my point James. Personally, (and as a non-yank it's arguably none of my business, although it must be said, my own dear country catches a cold every time America sneezes) I could have stood Clinton for another term, despite his personality problems.

The US has a real problem with its uptight public morallity. Had Clinton been president of France the Lewinski affair would have guaranteed  him another term, where male weakness in the face of young female availability is seen as one of the inevitable facts of life. French women would have fancied him more (girls can't help loving a rogue), French men would have admired and envied him.

What would the so-called moral majority have said at the time, of the antics of your most popular president of all time, JFK, had the CIA not been following him around cleaning up after him? Whether or not the job got too messy for them in the end is a matter for the grassy knoll conspiracy theorists.

No argument here- I don't understand how we can be so cyncial about politics and yet so unwilling to let politicians be human beings. We all expect them to lie, cheat and steal, but sex and drugs are immediate disqualifications (unless you're Marion Barry).

Poor Ralph is having a bad time. The Dems are waging a secret war to keep him off the ballots while Bush supporters are actually trying to help his campaign. Seems both factions are so unsure of their own man that they're willing to tinker with Nader's candidacy. I still don't know if he'd make a good president, but he'd certainly provide some fresh debate- Bush and Kerry are closer to agreement on major issues than anyone is willing to admit.

Getting pretty darn sick of the attention being paid to their Vietnam history. Kerry served in combat and realized what a mess the whole thing was. Bush got to stay home and obviously didn't learn a thing (he was watching Nixon and taking notes, I guess). Now everyone is waiting for the RNC (good job getting NYC to host- how about a little more worry for the Big Apple) to become what the DNC was in '68. All I know is there will probably be just as much or more police brutality (earned or not), even more fragmented pointless rhetoric, and the music won't be as good this time around.

Oh yeah, and supposedly Iran is now looming in the sights of a disappointed US war machine. What can you imagine happening (or being made happen) before election day?

Apart from the tragic loss of life and trauma to the world, one of the worst concequences of 9/11 was the fact that it gave the neocons the chance to take a full grasp of their puppet's strings and make him dance like a headless chicken (apols. for mixed metafor). They have used the window of panic-stricken opportunity to bring in all sorts of kneejerk foreign policies. They use, and even fan the flames of fear and paranoia to try and create the USA they always wanted. A bunch islamaphobic, gun toting, isolationist, white protestant males calling all the shots. This is not good for America or the rest of the world. It is good for the neocons and their ultra right cronies.

"Oh yeah, and supposedly Iran is now looming in the sights of a disappointed US war machine. What can you imagine happening (or being made happen) before election day?"

I shudder to think James.

"Iran would be dangerous if they have a nuclear weapon."
George Bush- Washington, D.C., June 18, 2003

Glad you cleared that up Georgie boy.

Hehe- you GOP guys will probably have the last laugh, as it looks like Kerry is falling asleep at the wheel. Not to mention that we still have an October Suprise to look forward to- perhaps a pre-arranged capture/ surrender, or maybe even an orchestrated homeland tragedy to give GWB the decisive edge in the polls.

Luckily, between now and election day we have Silent Hill 4, Fable, and Halo 2 coming out for the Xbox...I'll be able to support one of the real rulers of the planet, Bill (All Hail Our Supreme Lord and Master) Gates.

I love Bill Gates. I had this whole speech saved by him until my harddrive died. It was quite inspirational

.....and I apologize for my democrat remark....all those anti Bush slams in this thread were getting the best of my emotions.

That's OK- I'm not a dem myself, so no offense taken. A lively discussion beats an apathetic consensus any day!

But in the other hand, there's nothing much you can do about Bush these days, he's definitely a basket case (the easy target)... I think Kerry's got this one already in his pocket (but there will always be time and facts to prove me wrong )

It's sad that nobody who is really qualified to run the country would ever think of running...or make it through the twisted, entrenched obstacle course long enough to enter government.

I know it's heresy, but maybe putting government in the hands of the people is really expecting too much from them. I know I've made many choices in my life that were foolish and potentially dangerous- why should the country have to suffer because a majority of the population collectively got wasted and took the wrong girl home? Metaphorically speaking, of course...
