Tony Fisher probably agrees with some of your folk preferances. I don't.
Comus, Pierrot Lunaire, Jan Dukes Degrey are fantastic. Horslips is boring and Strawbs From the Witchwood, is the only album I really like by them. |

I think Tony Fisher will think that you and I are the same person after reading this your post >> although you might want to re-listen to Strawbs' Collection Of Antioque And Curios. Make sure you get the remasters with the fantastic three bonus tracks too. Edited by Sean Trane - September 22 2006 at 05:52 |

Pierrot Lunaire and APP folk related? Another odd list, Mr Dallas! Edited by oliverstoned - September 22 2006 at 05:40 |

I've become mini Sean. How embarrassing. (Will re-listen) BTW: How can you be so coldhearted and give Kate Bush's wonderfully charming debut **, Bryan? Is because its not prog? APP is actually in prog related and if you look at Bryan's title it mixes proto, related and folk prog. This explaining that!!
Pierrot Lunaire is is in prog folk because of its Schoenberg (12 dances and stuff) and Tarantella influences .

Pro-prog Folk??
Deeply troubled by the terminology and bands listed.
Why isn't, for example, a classic 60's mix of folk and hippydom such as Arlo Guthrie's Alice Restaurant listed? Or even Dovovan , who had many compositions covered by many a prog band......

I think the title of the thread is meant to be a melange of proto prog, prog folk and prog related, Dick.

Perhaps it is me trying interpret on the basis of examples, and getting nowhere. However, anybody up to developing a separate 'proto-folk prog' thread, or should that be 'photo frog pork'

Umm...let me think- proto prog folk.... I guess Al Stewart's 'Love Chronicles', The Incredible String Band's 'The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter', Pentangle's first 4 albums, something by Davy Graham, John Renbourn, perhaps Bert Jansch's 'Jack Orion' (Jimmy Page ransacked this album something rotten!), 'Nicola' (augmenting folk with strings though Jansch hates the album I think) and 'Birthday Blues', Buffalo Springfield's second album, Crosby, Stills and Nash's debut, The Byrds' 'Fifth Dimension' (experimenting with folk rock/world music/jazz), Tim Buckley's 'Goodbye and Hello' and 'Happy/Sad', Donovan's 'Sunshine Superman', Roy Harper's 'Folkjokeopus'(an early near side long track in 'McGoohan's Blues'- a paean to Patrick McGoohan perhaps?), Jefferson Airplane's debut and 'Surrealistic Pillow' (though there's a lot of psych here), Bob Dylan's 'Blonde On Blonde' (perhaps- had a side long track), The Band's 'Music From Big Pink' (inspired musicians like Clapton etc to go back to roots music), Nick Drake's 'Five Leaves Left' and 'Bryter Layter' (lots of ornate orchestrations).
I'll think of a few more in due course... Edited by salmacis - September 22 2006 at 11:12 |

Not that I see much "folk" there in those PA-deemed "folk & related" (whatever)discs, but FOLK DOES NOT BELONG HERE.

Can I just state that I did not nominate any of those albums I mention for inclusion here...Just an observation of albums that went beyond the folk parameters that led to the prog/acid folk genre in reply to Dick Heath's observation about proto prog folk albums. I think some probably now think I'm going to start a poll to include Bob Dylan and Bert Jansch.... |
