Does anyone know any good free software for splitting large mp3 files into smaller ones?

Not free Bob, but I have Magix MP3 maker, which cost me less than 10 pounds. It's very good for that sort of thing.

It's also the first software I've come across which allows you to burn separate tracks without any gap between them, you can even cross fade them.

I use Audio Surgeon to convert some old vinyl to mp3. It does splitting, some basic cleaning up (hiss/pop filtering, echos, etc.), and editing (fades, loops, etc.). Costs $30USD, you can also download a free trial.

Also try WavePad - it has a free Slice plug-in (among others). And it's free!
