I have Deloused and Frances.... I'm sorry that while I do like moments
of these albums, I can't really appreciate them. I think its
mostly the static cheap TV antenna noise that plagues the albums
(especially Frances).
When I'm listening to the random noodling of CB radio on Frances, I can't help but think that I should be spending my time with a band that actually plays melodies and MUSIC. I mean, lots of bands make great soundscapes by making interesting sounds out of their instruments/recordings. I just don't "get" it here. I may give this band one more shot; I really do want to like them. I heard the newer album has more prog elements and less playing with a sound effects CD. Is this true? |

^Well, most of their material is music. And it is fantastic. The noise is something you may have to just get used to.

But PT don't have the frantic pace that TMV do. A mix of spacy and frantic is different and would be much better than what I think the sample on their Myspace is. It's good, but they could be so much better.

TMV are a very prententious group, and they will give us many surprises in the years to come. I see many twists ahead, and that's just how I like my bands. |

The noises and "soundscapes" would not be as big of a problem if the writing were stronger. Unfortunately, on Frances, I didn't think the riffs or dynamics were there. As a result, the noises seemed to acknowledge--and certainly highlighted--the possibility that the band didn't have as much confidence in their material as they did on their watershed debut.
This suspicion holds up in their live shows. I've seen Mars Volta three times: once in a 400 person space, once in an 800 person space and once in a 2500 person space. The maddening truth remains: they don't know how to jam. Their interaction, if it can be called that, is barely existent. Basically, no one is really listening to each other in any meaningful way. There is a lot of room for development here.
With all of that being said, Mars Volta are possibly the most exciting band to arise in the new millenium. I had not heard a band truly and clearly reinvent prog rock in such a striking way since OK Computer, if not earlier. They hold a lot of promise and a lot of potential that was not met on Frances. However, their ambitions and pretensions should fuel the fire of their growth into the future. The question is whether hubris will affirm their worst tendencies or whether honest self-criticism will force them to truly grow artistically, in their compositional and improvisatory skills.

Well, I enjoy both their avant and their ambient sides. Both of their albums are masterpieces and they're the best band since the 70's. FTM is in my top 3 albume ever. In other words, I'm a hopeless fanboy

I've got a date with them this Thursday along with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and so I'm hoping they're as good live as everyone cracks them to be.

"But wow, I’m actually kind of impressed around six and a half minutes in, because I have never, ever heard a guitar made to sound so much like a cat being run through the dryer. And amid some free-jazz squawking, the track mercifully ceases." ![]() Edited by Kleynan - August 22 2006 at 09:43 |

I already knew TMV when I joined PA, and had already got "Frances the Mute" on the strength of the five-star review I'd read on Classic Rock Magazine. I liked the album immediately, though I realised it wasn't easy listening by any means. Then, a few months later, I got "De-loused...", and I immediately realised that it was undoubtedly the better effort. About a month ago I gave it five stars in my review, which I think it highly deserves - one of the best debut albums ever, IMHO. TMV have a lot of promise in them, so I can't wait to get "Amputechture" - I heard "Viscera Eyes" on the web and it rocked! However, I can also understand they may not be to everyone's taste.

Dead on. This accounts for 90% of my frustration with the band. DeLoused was so amazing --- I don't think even PT has the atmosphere DeLoused had. A certain ghostly, ethereal feel to it... like it was hollow and their music was filling the void. I do think they're going in a shallow direction now... |

This band left me confused and disorientated, maybe it takes a few listenings to really get the feel of them.

^Definitely takes a few listens to get used to the sound and let the music grow on you. When I first got deloused my first thought was "wtf, this sucks

![]() They were pretty cool live (everything I expected them to be actually), they had a great energy and their wicked experimentation and improvisational skills really came to the foray (to the point where the only song I truly recognized was The Widow). They played about 5 or 6 songs in the total hour that they played. ![]() |
