Yeah, so I've been a fan since one of my friends mentioned them.
I looked 'em up on PA and have since been in love with them.
Where do you see the band going in the future? Does anyone know or care to speculate on their future? Does anyone care to comment on their live performance, or live recordings, as I want to find decent TMV shows, but the Comatorium only offers FLAC, and I am stupid?
Anyway, yeah discuss all things TMV here. (calling King Volta)

I have heard only "Cassandra Gemini" and "Tetragrammaton". I am not an immense fan of their powerful Prog, but I still respect their music and what they're doing. It's very innovative and well.. fun!

Personally, I think they should cut down on the random noise a bit. De-loused is excellent, but they need a lot more soundscape breaks with good chord shifts.

I love their first 2 albums. Even the random noise doesn't bother me as much as it seems to bother other people. I can't wait for the new album. I'll be playing that thing non-stop.
When I heard they were previewing "Viscera Eyes" on their website, I thought to myself, "I'll listen to it only once!" But, I listened to it over 20 times because it's so damn good.

I just hope they keep growing atistically. The new album has some advance regarding the previous, wich also is a bit ahead of the previous, etc. I'm sure they will, they are very independent. I'll never forget the first time I saw something related to them. It was a TV chanel, Sony, I think, that had somekind of TV briefing about "A very strange, but original band". A girl, aparently a model, was explaining the "agressive fusion of cuban roots, electronic music and progressive rock". My thoughts at the moment: "That's... weird". After that, they started with a re-run of "Mad About You", and my world ended...

I like The Mars Volta alot. From the very trippy Deloused in the comatorium to the extremly pompous Frances the mute. I don't have problem with the noise really and I'm eagerly waiting for their new album wich I heard alot of good things about it. I'm also not so bummed out about Jon Theodore leaving the band (although being one of the leading forces in their sound). I see it as an evolution of some sorts since their always reinventing themselves, I think that now without him things will be more different.

Yeah, everybody in my band was bummed when Jon left TMV.
Oh, and there is hardly any ambient noise on Amputechture. It's awesome.

¡So many people complaining about those noises!... I like abstraction very much, and those used in their previous albums are very intentionated ones, with nice sound textures to enjoy. They are in fact what transforms The Mars Volta albums in complete sound experiences, instead of leaving them in the "just songs album" cathegory. Those noises are very well structurated and there are days in wich I enjoy them more than the actual songs.

The new drummer was their original choice, and is a veteran of a few math rock bands.
I'm not a fan of math rock, but math rock drummers are usually pretty sick.

TMV have just started their career, and they've got a long career in front of them (hopefully). They can do great things in my opinion, and their albums just seem to get better each time.

Jon Theodore left TMV , I didnt hear that. Thats a damn shame as he's one of the best drummers I've ever heard. Does anyone know if he lrft before or after the recording of Amputechture (sp?)?

Pretty big fan of these guys; have been since their inception...
In the studio (which, get this, is being built in Brooklyn NY by my friend's brother who is the superintendant of their building come the end of this September) I'm not sure where they'll be going in the future but I'd like to see a lot more brass work, less sound effects which they've thankfully cut in Amputechture, and perhaps more ambient synths and less noodly guitar freak-outs. I would also like to see the band improve as musicians and become an almost fusion-rock outfit.
Live on the other hand, I'd like to see a bit, but not too much restraint in the players, esp. in regard to Omar and Cedric. They seem to over-exert themselves a bit much, and I feel least, should learn when to contribute and when not to. Because of this they also tend to give the songs a rather rushed feel rather than opening them up to breathe a la what Yes did on their last disgrace of a tour.
Probably one of the most exciting live bands though, sloppy here and there, but still a band that at least takes the time to not play straight and reproduce their albums. The tracks on the studio are really just takes in my mind, and I think all music driven bands should kind of have that; the spontaneity and the sense of making things new when taking it to a live context...it's tough and certainly may have its faults as well but that's just like anything else in life.

I know they've only released two full lengths, but they are already my favorite band. I'm so pumped for Amputechture. That's all I have to say for now.

That's a humongously bad thing IMO!
I want less random squeaky/glitchy noises and more Porcupine Tree/Floyd/Schulze-esque ambience.

I have Deloused and Frances.... I'm sorry that while I do like moments
of these albums, I can't really appreciate them. I think its
mostly the static cheap TV antenna noise that plagues the albums
(especially Frances).
When I'm listening to the random noodling of CB radio on Frances, I
can't help but think that I should be spending my time with a band that
actually plays melodies and MUSIC. I mean, lots of bands make great
soundscapes by making interesting sounds out of their
instruments/recordings. I just don't "get" it here.
I may give this band one more shot; I really do want to like them. I
heard the newer album has more prog elements and less playing with a
sound effects CD. Is this true?

^Well, most of their material is music. And it is fantastic. The noise is something you may have to just get used to.

But PT don't have the frantic pace that TMV do. A mix of spacy and frantic is different and would be much better than what I think the sample on their Myspace is. It's good, but they could be so much better.

TMV are a very prententious group, and they will give us many surprises in the years to come. I see many twists ahead, and that's just how I like my bands.

The noises and "soundscapes" would not be as big of a problem if the writing were stronger. Unfortunately, on Frances, I didn't think the riffs or dynamics were there. As a result, the noises seemed to acknowledge--and certainly highlighted--the possibility that the band didn't have as much confidence in their material as they did on their watershed debut.
This suspicion holds up in their live shows. I've seen Mars Volta three times: once in a 400 person space, once in an 800 person space and once in a 2500 person space. The maddening truth remains: they don't know how to jam. Their interaction, if it can be called that, is barely existent. Basically, no one is really listening to each other in any meaningful way. There is a lot of room for development here.
With all of that being said, Mars Volta are possibly the most exciting band to arise in the new millenium. I had not heard a band truly and clearly reinvent prog rock in such a striking way since OK Computer, if not earlier. They hold a lot of promise and a lot of potential that was not met on Frances. However, their ambitions and pretensions should fuel the fire of their growth into the future. The question is whether hubris will affirm their worst tendencies or whether honest self-criticism will force them to truly grow artistically, in their compositional and improvisatory skills.

Well, I enjoy both their avant and their ambient sides. Both of their albums are masterpieces and they're the best band since the 70's. FTM is in my top 3 albume ever. In other words, I'm a hopeless fanboy Been on a bike ride recently and among all the cars blasting rap, I heard someone playing Take A Veil... needless to say, that warmed my heart

I already knew TMV when I joined PA, and had already got "Frances the Mute" on the strength of the five-star review I'd read on Classic Rock Magazine. I liked the album immediately, though I realised it wasn't easy listening by any means. Then, a few months later, I got "De-loused...", and I immediately realised that it was undoubtedly the better effort. About a month ago I gave it five stars in my review, which I think it highly deserves - one of the best debut albums ever, IMHO. TMV have a lot of promise in them, so I can't wait to get "Amputechture" - I heard "Viscera Eyes" on the web and it rocked! However, I can also understand they may not be to everyone's taste.

Dead on. This accounts for 90% of my frustration with the band.
DeLoused was so amazing --- I don't think even PT has the atmosphere DeLoused had. A certain ghostly, ethereal feel to it... like it was hollow and their music was filling the void.
I do think they're going in a shallow direction now...

^Definitely takes a few listens to get used to the sound and let the music grow on you. When I first got deloused my first thought was "wtf, this sucks " but wit a couple more listens it grew on me and now I think it's a masterpiece.
