 Topic: KERRRAAANNGG - NWOBHM !!!!!!

The Golden age of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal lasted between 1978 and 1983, during that period there were hundreds of ear-blugeoning speed-metal bands doing the rounds in pubs and clubs in London (the Soundhouse, Kingsbury and many pubs in my locality) and all over Britain.
There were some amazing bands which conquered Europe and America, such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Def Leppard most notably, and influenced such bands as Metallica, Mercyful Fate and Guns'n'Roses. Also NWOBHM has the rather dodgy distinction of introducing the "Air Guitar" into rock culture, an amazing instrument anybody can play!!
Modern metal wouldn't be the same without the New Wave, so which are your favourite groups and why??? I have listed a few, so discuss discuss discuss...........KERRRAAANNGG!!!!

but I enjoy Saxon, Priest, Angelwitch, D. Head and D. Leppard from the list

Judas Priest,Budgie and Motorhead werent NWOBHM Mystic Fred!
I dont particularly like any of these bands but as a choice I will go for Motorhead who I saw live in Bolton in 1977 and were a good laugh.

I agree Tony, these could be borderline cases as some sources list these bands as NWOBHM, let's call them NWOBHM - related!!!!

Judas Priest definitely WERE NWOBHM, not sure about Budgie though(the album I had was no NWOBHM at all).
Voted for Motorhead.

They were probably one of the chief influences ON the NWOBHM movement.Dont believe everything you read on Wikipedia!
Judas Priest were formed in 1970...Rocka Rolla was 1974 and Sad Wings Of Destiny,Stained Class,Sin After Sin were all UK Top 30 charting albums establishing the Judas Priest style prior to 1978.

The stylistic differences between Iron Maiden and Judas Priest not being so evident is my primary reasoning for putting them into the same box, Tony. Now Budgie is where I do not get the similarity at all.

They were a part of the movement once it started though. I don't see how you can NOT be a part of different movements throughout the career. JP's other albums were done in other styles too. How about the poppy Turbo Lover and the Speed Metalish Painkiller?

I'm with you on this, Tony. Priest, Motorhead and Budgie existed way before the beginning of the NWOBHM, though they were going strong at that time, and this resulted in their being lumped in with other, more recent bands. However, it is also quite clear that they were a clear influence on some of those bands: Motorhead for Girlschool, Raven and Tank, Priest for Iron Maiden and Saxon, to name but two.

I have seen nearly every one of those bands. The 'Rock Garden' in Middlesbrough had a rock night every Friday. 'Iron Maiden', I remember were great. It was before they had made their first album, and they were one of the few bands that had a great stage show, even then. I remember seeing that Bruce Bruce fella in Samson too. Whatever happened to him I wonder?
