Some Pink Floyd (on Dark Side and Wish You Were Here) and some Steve Hackett, especially on his live archive series, ie: Live Archive 03.

Definitely AUDIENCE featuring Keith Gemmell on saxes [F,F,F and H on the H esp.]
ALSO Mel Collins has been mentioned but not 21st.CENTURY SCHIZOID BAND which is the band he plays with right NOW. When you consider that Ian McDonald is also in the band you can expect excellent sax playing and that is exactly what you get, esp. to some of the early KC classics which they feature.Check them out!

For a while I thought I'd read "prog with sex".... A bad case of one-track mind?Besides the excellent recommendations you have already received, I'd like to add Camel with Mel Collins (who also plays with KC), Dick Parry's contributions to Pink Floyd's DSOTM and WYWH, and Traffic (Chris Wood RIP) - "Glad", from their "John Barleycorn Must Die" album, is one of my favourite tracks (instrumental or not) of all times.

Oh, Yes. "Glad" is a great suggestion. One of my favorites also. But why stop there? The whole album is fantastic.
I am also going to jump on the bandwagon with VDGG, and KC.
You might also want to check out Morphine.

inspiration huh?...
I wouldnt say prog, since most virtuous musicians are also in the jazz/fusion gamma...i would definetely go for David Sanborn on TIGHTROPE of STEVE KHAN...you cant go wrong with that, is like Al Di Meola Meets Funk Style with beautifull sax.
There's three main paths for sax: 1: Sounding like a black saxophonist(wich if you arent black having that soul would be tough) 2 : Sounding like White wank ugly noise saxophonist(Like Elektric Band of Chick Corea) 3: Original and melodic Sounding that beats sometimes first path. Spyro Gyra also has interesting saxo soprano stuff but i would rather start with something less quiet.
Stay Classy
(David Sanborn also played with bunch of musicians, such as Phill collins)...He's just amazing

TO ROMANTIC WARRIOR:
David Sanborn is unbelievably good, I agree. Particularly like VOYEUR that strangely fitted into 1980. But the thread is Prog with Sex..[whoops, I mean Prog with SAX of course-- must be that troubling Shivaree sign off that gets a man all confused!]

King Crimson - Starless
and my favourite;
Hawkwind - Golden Void the original version on Warrior on the Edge of Time. Many of the later live versions feature synth inplace of Nik Turner's original sax.

I didn't notice any mention of Dark Side of the Moon - but I did skim read
There's also sax in Supertramp - "It's Raining Again" and "Bloody Well Right" spring to mind.
And check out Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Variations"
