One thing I forgot when posting above - I cannot
leave this thread without defending Tim Burton (a previous posting was
extremely scathing...); it's true, he doesn't always hit the mark (Big
Fish and Planet Of The Apes come to mind), but when he does (Ed Wood,
Edward Scissorhands, The Corpse Bride, Charlie & The Chocolate
Factory), he can take dark fantasy/fairy tales to a new level - he gave
Johnny Depp his first major break in movies (barring his awful
appearance in A Nightmare On Elm Street ), and their collaboration has continued ever since, with Depp going from strength to strength. |
He's one of the few contemporary directors with a strong signature, and
always manages to create a unique atmosphere in all his films (except
for Planet of the Apes). I'm moer than willing to forgive his minor
flaws. Ed Wood is fantastic, but my personal favorite is Nightmare
Before Christmas. Jack Skellington dramatizes the words a bit like
Peter Hammill.
BTW:Forgot a really revoltingly terrible film: Signs. A strong top ten contender for my second list.

Magnolia, but only because there's no story and it is about 1 hour too long.

Haha. I was talking about those infernal thumbs up/thumbs down/clappie emoticons that people use so often; they're unecessary and annoy the hell out of me. The approve, laughing, and some of the others annoy me just because they are annoying. Circular logic FTW. I don't know why, but the approve smilie especially makes me want to break something. However, you bring up a good point; I don't like all of the graphic emoticons (and some of them are not animated), so I will change it and put it in a nicer font and color.
You may think I'm crazy, but I have noticed that since I adopted my signature, I have seen very, very few abuses of "it's", so perhaps I can also encourage people to use words to express themselves. Since, after all, this is a forum, not a picture posting repository.

Oh I quite agree with you Ghandi. I try not to post that many emoticons, but I have been using them more often than I used too (which was never!). That approve smiley annoys me too. It's more like "smug" than "approve" and makes me want to hit something as well. I even imagine the person at the other end, who is posting said smiley, actually looking like that!
You're not alone. An admin on another forum I frequent also dislikes emoticons.
At one point in my life, I even boycotted the use of apostrophised words altogether! I also do not use words like "Ok", "won't" and "ain't" as they infuriate me. I use "all right" instead of "alright" as well.
Sometimes I also use emoticons for effect only; say in reply to someone else who has used them.

"Ain't" is annoying, as it's not a real word, but I don't have a problem with contractions, provided they are used correctly.
Oh yeah, it's very annoying when people use the clappie/thumbs up/etc. for their message icon. I would love it if that were removed, since it really serves no purpose at all.
There, this one is better. That first font made it look like I was shouting, which was not what I intended.

He uses the same atmosphere for every movie he directs. You can instantly tell a Tim Burton film from 3 seconds of a preview. His obsession with snow and apparent belief that it makes any scene worth shooting really annoys me. I'm sorry but besides Edward Scissorhands all of those films you mentioned I found terrible. Especially in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I found one shot in that movie that didn't annoy me.
I can't believe to see people negative reactions to Eyes Wide Shut. It's a must see in my book.

for Ghandi 2:
Well, I like at least some of the emoticons/smileys.........of course they can be overused by the lazy, but on balance they're more good than bad.......and they're one of many internet ummmmmmmmmm....flavours, shall we say?.....that inevitably will (and already have) changed the way we communicate, whether we like it or not. I'm old school, I still think there's a place for good grammar & accurate spelling......BTW, I double check my posts for its & it's, so maybe your (sic ) having an affect after orl.....but "ain't" is a word I like to use.......it shows the common touch, & emphasis, but the (correct !) apostrophe shows that one knows the rules, too......"aint" would be just common....
incidentally, I get my extra smileys from:
PS - why not start a thread on the use & misuse of our little animated friends?

Of course, one almost forgets, the staple really bad films from the 50s, 60s & 70s that are repeated on daytime TV:
The Conqueror - really, really, really bad......John Wayne as Genghis Khan.......say no more
The Vikings - Tony Curtis as - well, Tony Curtis actually.....his only role
And another Genghis Khan, the Omar Sharif one - I caught it not long ago on TV here - but to know how bad it is, you need only see the cast list: Robert Morley as the Emperor of China........Ho Hum......(that's not the Emperor's name, BTW, just my comment...)

What a weird list you have there
Where is "Manos": the Hands of Fate? Curse of the Batwoman? Pumaman?
The Creeping Terror? Outlaw (of Gor)? Space Mutiny? Hobgoblins? Radar
Secret Service? Santa Claus Conquers the Martians? The Incredibly
Strange Creatures who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-up Zombies?
Future War? Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell? Escape 2000? Time
Chasers? Night Train to Mundo Fine (aka Red Zone: Cuba - any Coleman
Francis movie would qualify)
And that's just a few actually from MST3K, all worse than the list above.
Outisde of that; Leonard Part 6, Braveheart, Highlander 2, Glitter, all
Police Academy films, Double Cross, Look at Me, For Da Love of Money
and Pure (the last four are extremely obscure, but I have subtitled
them into Swedish and they are truly hideous).
