Topic: IQ: Dark Matter Posted: June 25 2006 at 14:54 |
ok I just got this album and i really enjoy it, however it seems like it ripps off a lot of other music, mainly in the singing melodies
im at work right now so i cant listen to it carefully to find each example but i remember thinking that one part sounded like a part from dream theater's 'Scenes from a Memory'
ill try to pick out each example later

I think this album is really great. (Actually I have The Progtologist to thank for this recommendation)
IMHO they are the top Neo band.

Great album, not IQ's best, though.

Meh, I don't see why people like IQ so much. They're a solid band there are much better.

Some of the vocal melodies on that album are brilliant. The one that's always struck me in particular is the "day after day" chorus from the beginning of "Harvest of Souls". That is such a good melody yet it seems so simple and obvious that I've always wondered if it was "borrowed" from somewhere else. Mind you, McCartney was always thought that he must have stolen the melody to "Yesterday" when he first thought of it.

Did we ask?
You're right, there are a lot better; but, it's subjective and opinion based. Why can't people comprehend that? I have to repeatedly tell my 3 year old to talk to me like a big girl when she whines for something; yet, it still happens. What's your excuse?

I don't think they stole their melodies. Dark Matter is such a wonderful album, please let it be in the Olympus of prog rock classics in peace.

IMO their best album. The beginning of the album is particulary amazing. I don't see the similarities with Scenes From a Memory in any part of both albums.

Personally for me their best are their first two Tales From The Lush Attic and The Wake (which have recently been remastered and reissued). Ever is also a good choice, and sounds more like DM then the other two i mentioned.
As for Dark Matter...wonderful album. My first album by them that i bought and i still think it's fantastic (though probably my third favorite by them).

I was never whining, and I don't think that was even a complaint. Comparing me to a 3 year old child for a simple muse on a somewhat common belief is insulting. I was never assulting another's opinion, just wondering aloud why people like them so much.
I like Dark Matter. I'd give it no less than 4 stars if I were to review it. It just confuses me a bit when people like Dark Matter so much when I think IQ have made better albums. I've seen far fewer topics started about The Wake, and I know some people hold Tales from the Lost Attic to be their best album, though I haven't heard it. Also, except for maybe Marillion, IQ is believed by a great number of members here to be the best neo Prog band when they would be hard-pressed to break my Top 5.

The Seventh House and Subterranea are awesome.
I still need to get Tales From The Lush Attic and The Wake. Stay away from Namzamo, though. Not too great.

IQ are to me the top Neo band, hands down, and it's the vocal melodies
that do it. They're almost always written my Mike and Martin, which
explains why they fit with (and are often mirrored in) the instrumental
sections.
I consider Subterrenea their masterpiece, followed by Ever, Tales from
the Lush Attic and Seventh House - only then do I slot in Dark Matter,
which I thought lacked some depth, and tended to repeat some ideas to
stretch the songs into Epic length. DM isn't a bad album, but to me,
there's far better in the Nicholls IQ catalogue - and there are
individual tracks not on the albums above that outdo all on DM (Dans le
Parc..., It all Stops Here, Headlong, Magic Roundabout).

I just get so sick and tired of reading, "I don't know how anyone can like so and so." I have those exact same feelings for a TON of artists; however, I have enough respect to allow them to enjoy it. Sorry if you feel insulted. Opinions should simply be left alone, however. Maybe state reasons why you don't like them, rather than lessening the opinions of others based on the simple fact that they don't correspond with yours.
Again, sorry for the knee jerk reaction. My response wasn't necessary.

"Ignorance" may be a dash strong. As you said, you were wondering aloud. Maybe I need to just relax a bit and maybe mix a bit of decaf in with my coffee.

I'm with those who think Dark Matter is a tremendous album, absolutely brilliant, right up there challenging the classics IMO. On the strength of that one, I bought Seventh House, but that one hasn't hit home yet. Am definitely going to get more of IQ's stuff....
