Talking of whom, what do you think of Dickinson's "The Chemical Wedding"? I find it a real masterpiece of 'intelligent' metal!

The approach taken by Fantomas is completely different... their short blasts of musical insanity are united by some kind of conceptual meaning, they all flow together into more or less one piece (not to mention contain incredibly tight musicianship). ND were (and still are) all about being raw, sloppy, brutal and to the point, which sort of goes against... well... everything generally associated with prog-metal.

Indeed - but just as John Cage's anarchic and random compositions were revolutionary to avant-garde music, so were Napalm Death to metal.
They may well have been the antithesis - on purpose, I might add - but the idea was a highly progressive one. Even if there was no need to go ahead and make additional albums of it.
The album "Scum" is a bona fide landmark - everything else ND did is either repetition or humdrum - and the statement it makes is almost unparalleled in metal.
The conceptual meaning is also there - never mind the musicianship, as that's unimportant and above all relative in rock music.

Since most proto-prog metal seems to be albums rather than specific bands, here are my top 13 (a good number for metal, I feel - I was going to go to 11, but thought that might be seen as unnecessarily ironic ); You mentioned some of my favourite albums in the hard-rock/heavy metal genre!
1. Diamond Head : Living On Borrowed Time (and the 50% of Canterbury which is even better). "Canterbury" had some great tracks on it.
"To The Devil" is outstanding - and tracks like "Ishmael" and "Night of the Swords" are Prog.
2. Metallica : Master of Puppets (and Ride the Lightning and Justice for All) ("Justice For All" is 100% classic Prog Metal!!!)
3. Judas Priest : Sad Wings of Destiny (but their debut album "PockaRolla" is a masterpiece of ART ROCK and "Sad Wings Of Destiny" is the born of NWOBHM!!!)
5. Black Sabbath : Heaven and Hell (and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - hey, it's got Rick Wakeman on it!) H&H is one of my all-time favourite albums. ("TYR" and other album with Tony Martin are 70% Prog Metal [for the concept, not for the music])
6. Motorhead - Overkill Are you sure about this one?
Absolutely 100% - it's amazingly varied, e.g. the title track, Capricorn, Stay Clean and Metropolis, and when you compare it to anything Motorhead did before or after, it's out of this world. Motorhead were one of the few bands that are completely NOT influenced by Priest, Sabbath et al - it was all Lemmy and what he brought from Hawkwind. Motorhead are criminally underrated. (the mentionated tracks is incredibly Proto Prog Metal!!!)
8. Rainbow - Rising (all album of Rainbow with Dio are a Prog Album!!! I Love Cozy Powell work. It is incredible innovative!!!)
9. Riot - Narita And what about the mighty "Fire Down Under"?
Fire Down Under is a great album, but sounds a bit "Narita part II" in many ways. (In 1997 I see a Riot concert in Pordenone. This band is incredible Power and innovative. But "Narita" is a clear example of Blues Metal Power Prog Rock!!!)
11. Saxon : Saxon (specifically "Frozen Rainbow") Not so sure about this one (This album is a Art Rock/ Proto Prog Metal album!!!)
12. Ozzy Osbourne : Blizzard of Oz (Mr Crowley and I Don't Know) Both great tracks! (Randy Rhoads RIP )
13. Blue Oyster Cult : Fire of Unknown Origin Absolutely fantastic album - "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" is out of this world! |
|
I missed out Raven's spectacular "All For One" - the track "Run Silent, Run Deep" is surely pure Prog metal!
Check out the Spooky Tooth album - you won't believe it was released in 1968 - before any of Led Zep's albums. You can hear the massive influence ST were on LZ, as well as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.
The track "Evil Woman" has a riff that Sabbath used for "Sweet Leaf", and this album contains the original of "Better By You, Better Than Me" that appears on Priest's "Stained Class".
This album NEEDS more recognition!!! |

I'm not an expert in metal, but as far as I know Rush has had a large
influence on many prog-metal bands. I consider them to be proto-prog
metal. Also, I'd say In Flames are prog metal related, since they're
similair to Opeth in many ways.

I'd give a NWOBHM band called Witchfynde the heads up- just got their excellent album 'Give 'Em Hell' that overcomes a slightly odd production and features some very progressive songs indeed- some of the longest NWOBHM songs this side of Maiden, Diamond Head and White Spirit. Great track called 'Leaving Nadir' that has a very progressive intro and a 9 minute epic called 'Unto The Ages Of the Ages'. The CD has a 9 minute extra track that's similarly very progressive called 'Tetelstai'. Heck, there's even a dig at celebrated journo of NWOBHM (and still writes for Classic Rock) Geoff Barton!! Top album.
White Spirit are another act- superb keyboard work and one of the all time great epics (imo) in the spellbinding 'Fool For The Gods' that's nigh on 11 minutes and full of time changes, drama and great musicianship. Probably the longest song in the whole NWOBHM movement that I know of.
As for Samson, I'd say that 'Shock Tactics', probably my favourite of their albums (but I love the Nicky Moore era too which is far more blues rock, however), has an element of prog, particularly with an outstanding track called 'Communion'.
Also check out Magnum- their heaviest, proggiest and imo, best album is 'Chase The Dragon'- a spellbinding mix of prog, pomp and heavy rock.

Actually, everyone on the team has placed his vote for them, it's just that it is 50/50, if I'm not mistaken, with nothing in between.
Hopefully we will discuss it this sunday.

I don't know how nicely this will go over, but what about considering Akercocke? I believe that their last album "Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone"
blends progressive metal in with the harshest black/death metal (as nicely as Opeth does in my opinion). I
suggest listening to the album if you haven't heard it otherwise and do
not be turned off by the incomprehensible grunts/rasps in their more
extreme parts, as I was in the beginning. (honestly Jason Mendonca's
incomprehensible rasps/growls add something to the music for me now)
*Many may also be turned off by the content of their lyrics, being
overtly blasphemous and sexual at times, but then again listen to some
of the stuff Comus has written!
Other than that... I cannot necessarily think of 9 more metal bands to add, but i'd be extremely proud if Akercocke made it onto progarchives!

Great idea, Mike! So, there's my list:
Judas Priest (circa "Sad Wings of Destiny") Iron Maiden (from "The Number of the Beast" onwards) Metallica (from "Ride the Lightning" to "And Justice for All) Megadeth (from "Peace Sells..." onwards)
Rainbow would not probably qualify as Metal, but I would include them all the same.

Just wanted to pop in here and point out that at the time that Rainbow were at their peak during the mid to late seventies, they were considered to be part of the Heavy Metal scene. The only bands heavier at that time were Motorhead. They were pretty much on a par with Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Saxon, MSG, AC/DC, Black Sabbbath, Gillan, and so many other bands at that time. None of these would be considered progressive althought some of the tracks by some of these bands did have progressive hooks, and light and shade. I think Rush were the only band around at that time that could be considered early Progressive Metal. I think the most underated of all the bands above were The Scorpions who, in the seventies, wrote some very intelligent rock ballads, and some outstanding and interesting guitar rock. Virgin Killer, Lovedrive, and Animal Magnetism, all come to mind. Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell is another personal favourite at that time (and still is!)

proto-prog metal: Metallica, Megadeth, and all the other 'big ones' already mentioned For Prog-metal related, I have to mention Freak Kitchen!! I was puzzled when I found out they weren't listed on this site, but at the same time I guess I can understand it. They(i.e. IA's guitar playing) are very experimental and creative, but their songs' structures are very simple and their songs aren't exactly very lengthy. Still, I think they're brilliant and very humoristic!!("Haw, haw, haw, I don't know what I'm singing now")
