Primus = amazing. 
Claypool is my favorite bassist
Tim has a huge impact on my drumming style.
Larry is an amazing guitarist. I don't think it could have worked with anyone else
Every album is amazing
Sailing the seas of cheese, frizzle fry, and pork soda are my favorites.
They are progressive whether this site says they are or not.
I don't get the whole Jaco Pastorius thing.

I saw somewhere that Les tried out for Metallica after Burton died but was too funky for them and he was pretty crushed he didn't get in. |
The way I heard the story is that Hetfield and Lars turned him away because he was too good to be playing in a band with this sort of format where the bass wouldn't play such an integral role.

They are a great band, but their albums are pretty inconsistent. I can only really enjoy about half of the material on an average Primus album. I think a couple (Sailing the Seas for sure) aren't too bad in that area though.

You Have no Idea what your talking about.. Antipop is one of their worst. Their best is something Like Frizzle Fry Or Sailing Th Seas Of Cheese. And I listend to Nothing But Primus for about 6 months I have 6 of their cds, and I think they are one of the best bands of all time!!
Les Claypool is the Best Bass Player of all time By far. no one even comes close. |
I never said Cheese and PS were bad, I just thought they needed to try something a bit different and they did with Anitpop and I love that album. If the only thing you have listened to for 6 months is Primus, then I will take with a grain of salt your comment that "I have no idea what I am talking about." This is not the site for you, my friend. Go hang out on a Primus board somewhere.

I'm seeing Les Claypool in concert, it's gonna kick ass.
I only have Tales from the Punchbowl and it's freakin awesome, I love how the foundation for the music is the bass and Les Claypool voice is so wacky. Kinda like a combination of Zappa and Rush, which is really cool.

Just imagine how different of a direction that band would've probably taken. As for Primus, they make me glad that Les wasn't let into Metallica. They are truly one of my favorite bands. Their songs are quirky, yet caontain so much energy and you can really bang your head to them. Herb and Les are top quality rockers, and Ler isn't too bad either, although his solos seem to usually go nowhere. They are a blend of Rush, Metallica, Sly Stone, and Zappa. Amazingly wierd and amazingly awesome.

Yes, the great thing about them is that they are unique. Hard to come up with another band like them that I know of anyway. And the guy who started this thread panned the lyrics, but are you really going to put serious lyrics about love and the meaning of life to those songs? I love me some of those lyrics.

Les Claypool is definitely the driving force behind Primus, and the source of its deranged humor and music. Without his unique deep bass tone and rhythms, Primus just wouldn't be Primus.
Les is a godly bassist/songwriter and all, but Ler himself is still awesome in his own right. Ler's real talent comes in the fact that he knows when enough is enough; when to hold back, and when to let loose. That's a talent that a good deal of guitarists lack. And, his wacky playing is a perfect match for Les' own unique stylings!
Tim "Herb" Alexander is a wild drummer, who also has a very unique style that Brain didn't capture quite as well (not to say that Brain wasn't good, of course).
Primus is the result of this match made in heaven (or rather, hell) and one of the most talented and original bands still around today.

Yeah, i totally agree with your coment on "Ler" Lalonde. he do knows
when to hold it up, and when he does, even if you dont play all the
atention on it cause the bass is doing some weird incredible riff,
gives all this and "color", totally grounds the mood of the music,
without him it wouldnt be Primus. Good example is a song called "the
ol' diamondback sturgeon" on the Pork Soda. there he keeps low profile
while the bass is doing its thing, but puts the flavour to the melody.
after that he explodes into a wonderful solo, one of my all time favourites.
man i love primus, ahs been my favorite band for a long time, i think
all their work, in each album, has something valuable and unique. my
fovorites are from Salinig the seas of cheese, to the (for me the best
work) Tales From The Punchbowl.
Primussucks!!
