    I had never even heard of zeuhl, until I saw a similar thread a little while ago. I now have a copy of "Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh," and I really like it. It wasn't easy to find, and I would like to find more.
    It definitely is not an easy style to jump into. Its oddness is a lot of what attracts me to it. I find it to be closer to opera than anything else. Indescribable really, but I'll try. Imagine experimental jazz, add Zappa's quirkiness, a dose of metal channeled through King Crimson, opera singers, and the influence of Richard Wagner. Make sense? If it does, then I probably haven't explained it very well.

an excellent job... and you cut to the chase on Zeuhl..at least for me... the oddness the quirkiness is what appeals to me.  Being one who's been called eccentric.. odd.. and a downright flake at times hahah.. I can relate to it. Wink Listen to Stoah off of Magma's Kobaia album...... that is a prog song that only a prog fan who's a couple cans short of a six pack could love ahahhah

Wow, Mikey didn't think you were the Zeuhl type. LOL ... Well my experience with the genra is rather limited I love what I hear so far out of Magma. I just think that they are awesome!!! I have the albums:
 
Magma (Kobaia) (1970)
1001 Centigrade (1971)
 
-----------
 
Both albums are wonderful and being that I'm allready a huge Jazz/Rock Fusion fan I took to magma rather quicky also I love the idea of them being a "CONCEPT BAND", it's just crazy!!!

So am I wrong.... Stoah off of Kobaia... do you have to be nuts to find pleasure in those vocals LOL

oh... and your next non-Magma purchase.... get Eros by Dun... gimp recommended it to be awhile back.  Incredible album... knowing yours tastes.... you'll love it.  Check the sample if you haven't already.

Well, I've only recently aquired the albums so I haven't gotten to listen to them all that much (even though I've listened to De Futura nearly 100 times) but their vocals in general would be alot for the average listener to swallow. I definately hear some Zappa in their music as well.

hahahha... how I adore De Futura... had that baby shaking the windows this afternoon. (had the day off today and it was nice hahaha).  The vocals are obviously a bit to swallow.... but oh are they so tastey hahahha.

Thanks for the reccomendation Micky. I am listening to it right now, and I think it's great! Either we are geniuses, or we should seek immediate professional help.

and Dün - Eros  is a masterpiece


That's definitely a kind of beauty as well. Not in the classical sense, perhaps, but beautiful all the same - think of the difference between classical and Gothic architecture. That track from "Eros" sure was intriguing, to say the least.

And, Rocktopus, you're perfectly right when you say that there's not such a big step from Soft Machine and Hatfield and the North to Zeuhl: yesterday, when I was listening to that Dun track, I kept thinking of the Softs.

I mean, you say you don't like avant-garde, and yet you listen to Kraut rock. And if you've managed to find the beauty in Kraut, surely you can find the beauty in Zeuhl.

I remember my first tme listening to Magma : I put the vinyl away 30 seconds after... and I thought : what is this ? Noise ?
A couple of years later, I decided to give it a spin and now I absolutely love Magma. I even went to see them in concert ! Vander is incredible and awesome. He's got a great voice too.
Anyway, this is just to say that Magma is very hard to get into. Just come back to it later if it doesn't get you at first.

Well... (and here I imagine {silly me! Wink} that you're really meaning what you're saying and not just trolling around) what is your experience in that 'genre'? Ever listened to Magma? (and here I imagine {I must be out of my head! LOL} that you actually listened to some 'zeuhl ' music) What don't you get? The vocals? The jazz element? The spirituality? The fact that many Magma-fans are unnecessarily fanatics?
 
You ask : "What's the beauty???" euh... euh... What???? Any chance you can put that into more words? I have no idea what you're talking about. ConfusedConfusedConfused Beauty in the 'genre'? Beauty in the music? Beauty in the composition? Beauty??????? It's very intense music. Maybe is that too much for you? I'm not teasing! Some people really cannot deal with something THAT intense, just like some people cannot shut up even in the most wonderful silence.

i havent heard enough Zeuhl, i just own Eros, and a couple of Magmas albums, i like them all, but i need to hear more... the only problem is to find Zeuhl albums

They are play here in Milwaukee WI (they are from Racine; just down the road). I heard a bit of it on the radio but could not listen long. I didn't know that was what Zeuhl was. It was very good. A bit jazzy for me but still very good. The bass player is also in a local prog intstrumental band called Kopecky (all three are brothers).
