Basically that. Some styles take a long time to acquire, while others you know you probably won't ever bother with. I try to be open minded, but I don't think I'll ever get into Prog Metal, it's usually just so loud, some of the groups have the perception of being satanic, it has no joy in it (prove me wrong), and seems to evoke the same emotions: anger. Thats probably why I don't bother with PF's the Wall - too depressing, I loved it as a teenanger though LOL.
It's more on principle than narrow mindedness that I don't listen to prog metal, it feels unhealthy.
But prove me wrong, I like old metal like Rush and Zep, but they are a different beast to what is considered metal today.
Well vote and choose what you don't like. Yep another negativity poll, but yet we may help and guide each other to be more open minded, or not.Smile

I take offense to you referring to Prog Metal as satanic.

What a typical stereotype, and totally unfounded.

Could you give me some examples please?

Well done Cheesie Mouse you've managed to upset the whole Prog-Metal Community. They are currently hiring a taxi and are on their way round to your place now....

I've never noticed any satanic references in Dream Theater's work or in fact any of the more popular Prog-Metal bands.
Pity really it might make them more intersting.
Prog-Metal for me,followed closely by Zheul,Kraut,Rio/Avant,Exp/Post Rock and anything else that might shatter my cosy little conservative music world.

Any resemblance The Progtologist's avatar's have to worship of the black arts are purely coincidental and incidental to the fact that he likes Black Metal and once ate a virgin....(Prog Archive's Lawyers intervened at this point)

Seconded.

I guess it's just too far removed from what us avant-proggers are used to, eh?

I'm a Christian, and I dont think prog metal is satanic. Well, some bands have lyrics and images that are not in line or may agree with my beliefs, but I could care less. Black Metal/ Death Metal maybe, but not prog metal.
Well, Im really not into Kraut Rock, Canterbury, Raga Rock, but i cant say i dont like/hate them. Im into Prog metal, Jazz Rock, Art Rock, Proto prog and Symphonic prog.

same here,

but I think some progmetal is better (more inventive anyway) than most neo-prog
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Well, some Black Metal bands have a satanic background. And he did say "only some".

DeadAngryOuchShockedUnhappyThumbs Down
That sums up pretty well my sentiments about the post.
What is satanic about Dream Theater,Pain of Salvation, Symphony X,Fates Warning,Queensryche
etc.?
This pretty stupid thread evokes far more anger than all. prog metal albums in the world together.

The topic starter is right when he says that there is not much joy in progmetal. Still, the qualities I seek in music can be found in the progmetal groups I listen to.

I voted for neo-prog, as it is the genre I can go without easily.

Definitely prog metal. A friend of mine gave me copies of most of Dream Theater's CDs which I managed to listen to carefully. (I mean in a quiet room with good quality HIFI headphones). I could not stand listening to the end of any of the CDs I had.

My conclusion is definitive, whatever this site's masters may claim in return: there is no prog in this. I heard noisy, repetitive, inspirationless, and not even technically great metal with some (tenous) Black Sabbath and Deep Purple reminiscences.

I gave them a second chance listening to them via loudspeakers (also goo quality). My wife, who enjoys a lot of prog bands, and children, who are playing in rock bands demanded that I lower the volume, being tired of the noise.

Galaxies away from what you can hear from bands classified in the other subgenres.

I fact, in prog metal, there is one word in excess. Like saying "Cold Heat" or "Dark light" or "Intelligent Politician"Big smile

Way to go! You summed up a diverse, lush genre of music with the help of its least inspired representative! Clap

I dont know what you were listening to but that doesnt sound like DT to me.

As far as  the genre's go,  I havnt found one yet that I dont like, but then I havnt heard all genres and to be honest Electronic is probably going to be the last port of call for me.
Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

With the exception of Dream Theater, I have a hard time distinguishing prog metal from heavy metal.
