Subject: What style of prog do you like least?
Date Posted: May 11 2006 at 05:34
Basically that. Some styles take a long time to acquire, while others you know you probably won't ever bother with. I try to be open minded, but I don't think I'll ever get into Prog Metal, it's usually just so loud, some of the groups have the perception of being satanic, it has no joy in it (prove me wrong), and seems to evoke the same emotions: anger. Thats probably why I don't bother with PF's the Wall - too depressing, I loved it as a teenanger though .
It's more on principle than narrow mindedness that I don't listen to prog metal, it feels unhealthy.
But prove me wrong, I like old metal like Rush and Zep, but they are a different beast to what is considered metal today.
Well vote and choose what you don't like. Yep another negativity poll, but yet we may help and guide each other to be more open minded, or not.

What a typical stereotype, and totally unfounded.
Could you give me some examples please?

Well done Cheesie Mouse you've managed to upset the whole Prog-Metal Community. They are currently hiring a taxi and are on their way round to your place now....
I've never noticed any satanic references in Dream Theater's work or in fact any of the more popular Prog-Metal bands.
Pity really it might make them more intersting.
Prog-Metal for me,followed closely by Zheul,Kraut,Rio/Avant,Exp/Post Rock and anything else that might shatter my cosy little conservative music world.

I'm a Christian, and I dont think prog metal is satanic. Well, some bands have lyrics and images that are not in line or may agree with my beliefs, but I could care less. Black Metal/ Death Metal maybe, but not prog metal.
Well, Im really not into Kraut Rock, Canterbury, Raga Rock, but i cant say i dont like/hate them. Im into Prog metal, Jazz Rock, Art Rock, Proto prog and Symphonic prog.

That sums up pretty well my sentiments about the post.
What is satanic about Dream Theater,Pain of Salvation, Symphony X,Fates Warning,Queensryche
etc.?
This pretty stupid thread evokes far more anger than all. prog metal albums in the world together.

The topic starter is right when he says that there is not much joy in progmetal. Still, the qualities I seek in music can be found in the progmetal groups I listen to.
I voted for neo-prog, as it is the genre I can go without easily.

Definitely prog metal. A friend of mine gave me copies of most of Dream Theater's CDs which I managed to listen to carefully. (I mean in a quiet room with good quality HIFI headphones). I could not stand listening to the end of any of the CDs I had.
My conclusion is definitive, whatever this site's masters may claim in return: there is no prog in this. I heard noisy, repetitive, inspirationless, and not even technically great metal with some (tenous) Black Sabbath and Deep Purple reminiscences.
I gave them a second chance listening to them via loudspeakers (also goo quality). My wife, who enjoys a lot of prog bands, and children, who are playing in rock bands demanded that I lower the volume, being tired of the noise.
Galaxies away from what you can hear from bands classified in the other subgenres.
I fact, in prog metal, there is one word in excess. Like saying "Cold Heat" or "Dark light" or "Intelligent Politician"

I general hook the album produced between 1967 and 1980 and those of the profitable artists in that make sentences successive to 1980. For this reason I voted: "I love all of them". Nevertheless listening willingly also the Prog Metal in the version of Queensryche, Dream Theatre, Vanden Plas, etc... The Post Rock not listened willingly, but do not so I am closed from not to recognize that this is a very important genre (above all in future key).

I voted for electronic, since nothing I've listened to has really managed to touch me. But I admit I haven't listened to much except some Tangerine and Schulze albums and the well known Jarre/Vangelis, which have pretty little in common with prog in my opinion.
I'm still trying to get into Canterbury scene and kraut rock... It's not working yet, but I suspect I'll end up liking these as well.
As for the prog metal thing, some people's opinions are tragically laughable. I've yet to hear a negative but competent commentary on progressive metal from someone who has actually LISTENED to this music. And I don't mean people who listen to three DT songs, some Tool and one or two Opeth tracks and suddenly become connoisseurs. Please, stop this nonsense - you haven't listened properly, and you don't have the necessary criteria to judge this type of music (understanding the context in which it appeared and the way it evolved over the years etc.). Of course, if you're a fan of, say, Gentle Giant, nobody will force you to listen to Psychotic Waltz and like them just as much, but don't judge what you don't know.

i think if you stopped the average joe or sue in the street and asked if heavy metal was "satanist" they would probably say "yes", as many remember ozzy and the sabs' tongue-in-cheek references to the black arts in the early 70's, and some NWOBHM acts such as "Angelwitch" in the 80's, and also King Diamond. but i have never heard any prog metal band refer the black arts, but in the conciousness of the masses any metal, prog or otherwise, could possibly linked in their minds with satanism, but not to enlightened prog metal fans!

for me the Zeuhl subgenre is what I least like. Although there are some other subgenre's that I hardly ever listen to, there's most of the time at least some stuff included that I can listen to, whether all the Zeuhl music I've listened to up to know was simply horrible to these ears

Not a connoiseur. I think that prog metal is excellent music....but i don't like it. And I don't distinguish between Heavy Metal and Prog Metal. Queensreich "Empire" I've heard many times, I love it, but it's heavy metal, I don't find prog in there, excepting it tells a story... Dream Theatre is very progressive but too noisy and frantic. Heavier than I can stand. In heavy Metal, the heaviest I can enjoy is Metallica. Heavier than that I pass....

Never really discovered or cared about Kraut Rock, but I don't like Proto Prog at all. I'd go far enough to say that it isn't even progressive.
On the positive side, I love modern symphonic prog and non-power prog metal. Prog-power is the neo-prog of prog metal.

What kind of prog polls do you not like/least like?
Every style has something to offer, that's why I refuse to vote. But the least loved are Kraut prog,Zeuhl,RIO/Avant prog,Jazz rock/Fusion and Electronic Prog.I haven'te heard ANYTHING from Indo/Raga,but I KNOW I'd NOT like it - I HATE oriental stuff.Experimental /Post Rock - I'm a newbie here.
Can't get why there's so many votes against Neo and Metal...OK,I ain't a great Prog-Metal fan,but TOOL and OPETH are really great!!!
Symphonic prog - 5 stars
Art prog - 4 stars
Proto prog - 2.5 stars
Prog Related - 2.5 stars
Prog Metal - 3 stars
Italian Symph prog - 4.5 stars
Cantebury - 3.5 stars
Neo Prog - 3.5 stars (but I relly LOVE some bands here!)
New Symphonic - 4 stars
Prog Folk - 3.5 stars
Psychodelic/Space Rock - 3 stars

I know, I dislike 'techno prog' the most. Progressive disco and

The poll isn't necessarily about styles that you hate, if you look at the question it can also mean the styles you least like. Which means you may like a certain style but not as much as another style. This isn't a hate poll!!!

I kind of mentioned it earlier on this thread, I don't thik all prog metal or prog metal as a genre is satanic, just according to what I've heard from hearsay, and also some groups like tool give that impression of being satanic.

(This Question is answered much easier than the question which genre I like most, as I love nearly all of them especially RIO, Fusion, Psychedelic, Canterbury..)
Neo Prog Definitely
I can´t think of one Neo Prog Band that impressed me and I am even wondering what is so "progressive" about this genre....
My second Vote would be Prog Metal but here I know some exceptions (Liquid Tension Experiment (which I consider to be Jazz Rock/Fusion) and Dream Theater (But only the Scenes from a memory album)) like someone else said i cannot really see, why some bands are PROG Metal and not Heavy Metal
I also don´t like some Art Rock Bands and nearly everything recorded in the 80´s or in the early 90´s
