I think you have a very valid point here. All one has to do is watch a recent video of YES or other 70's prog bands to see all those bald and greying heads in the audience. I think bands like Dream Theater and Rush capture more of the younger people and then those same younger people may develop tastes for the older prog bands. One of the biggest factors I think is whether or not the young people's parents listened to prog and coaxed the interest that way.

Possibly the reason why there are so many 15-20 prog fans is that we are a generation that strives to be different, one step more independant and unique than the previous generations. There maybe so fewer under 15 because 15 is around the age one enters highschool and becomes independant and discovers his or her personality, and in middleschool there is a pressure to be mainstream and conform to the ideals set by pop culture. Prog brings out the nonconformist all of us because it isn't in the mainstream yet.
I know that at my school, at least 30-40% of the students listen to one or more prog bands, although mostly prog metal. It's funny how the rich kids who try to be popular and pretty and are somewhat goody-goody and are preppy socialites are unpopular

Remember, those that follow often lose their way depending on who is leading, those that lead can chart their own destiny.

Im surprised at the results of the poll so far - I figured thered be a surplus of original progheads from the 70s, first-time-arounders.

I'm currently 14 and my five favorite bands are Rush (all-time favorite), Yes, Supertramp, Genesis, and Gentle Giant, yet I also have very much respect for Edgar Froese, Tangerine Dream, and Mike Oldfield. Pink Floyd, ELP, Camel, etc. then follow. Liking prog may have something to do with age and it most likely does to an extent; nothing is ever completely dependent on one factor. My brother, currently 10 years of age, absolutely loves "Supper's Ready" by Genesis and listens to mostly prog, although he likes a bit of everything. I also have a few friends that I have introduced to prog and although it may seem that prog could possibly be turning, I believe that this genre will always be a minority as such, at least to some extent. Considering that most people wouldn't listen to it freely, especially in my generation, age definitely could be a decent factor, but it isn't necessarily, since I am definitely the progressive music fan within my entire family.

I think it'd have to be from about the teen years to right before you're a senior citizen. My dad grew up with prog and now I'm a huge fan (i'm 18).

Perhaps you're right, but it can also be the other way around... to me progarchives van a revelation. I started listening prog by means of Marillion and Pink Floyd and after being here for quite some time I discovered other stuff, lots of prog metal indeed, but I'm also a s*cker for space rock or ambient prog stuff in general Wink ... and even Symphonic Rock Stern Smile
 
But maybe I'm just a weird exception around these regions LOLWink

Oh, I noticed that a lot of people seem to think that it's mostly the youngsters that appreciate prog metal and the older people 'classic prog'. Well, I'm quite an exception to *that* statement as well - I happen to appreciate (the best of) both.
