A bit of a demographic survey... if we can draw conclusions, maybe we can explore whether ProgRock is also gender-related.

Im 15 and have been into prog since I was 10. Genesis and King Crimson started my prog addiction!
However, I heard Supertramp when I was 4 and Jean-Michel Jarre since I was 9, and they're still my favorite artists.

Thanx, Joren... didn't know this poll was done before... and I really think the results are quite interesting, with the majority (at that time) being quite young... I guess it might have been related to internet-literacy??? In that case, the results this time may differ.

I am 46, the correct age iif you want to have been there when it all happened (1972-73 I mean). It is the taste that you acquire in your teens that you often bring with you. And when that taste is prog, it is quality lane all the way!!!

Progressive rock could be birth related
Progressive rock is much like jazz or classical music, thus there will only be a limited audience for this music as it does not have easy to listen to catchy riffs or it performers are not able to dance around on stage and still be able to play the music
Progressive rock came of age with a boomer population where the small percentage of fans was still big enough to financially support making such records and touring.
When a similar boomer population occurs, then such complex music will be more accessible

25 here, but I've liked The Moody Blues since I was about 13 or so (due to my parents and living in the birth town of Justin Hayward... and seeing them in concert in my teenage years). I was a huge Queen fan in the 1980s, which is a bit worrying now I come to think of it! My big brother always liked Pink Floyd, so I always got to hear Dark Side Of The Moon as well as Jean Michel Jarre (not that he's that prog mind you), oh and Mike Oldfield's Tublar Bells, so that's where I've got my prog interest from. I'm now more into prog than any of the family, which I quite like the thought of.

I'm (gasp!) 45.
I do think, though, that it's largely the metal that initially brings the now pre-dominant younger set here (but once here, many younger members seem to branch out into classic prog).
At first (2+ years ago) we were mostly 40-something year old males here (prog's heyday was around 1970-75), but the site's demographics have changed radically since then. I don't believe the classic prog bands on their own (ie, no prog metal) would have brought in many younger members.
So, my GENERALIZATION (there are always exceptions), drawn from my experience here, is that most classic prog fans are in their 40s & 50s, while most prog metal fans are in their teens & 20s. (There is, of course, increasing movement both ways now, though again, I think a teen is likely more open to old prog, than an oldster like myself is toward prog metal. Tastes in art, etc, tend to be fairly firmly set by middle age.)

As per my post before yours, I believe it's largely the latter case, initially, but then many of our younger members branch out to do the former -- discover the (supposed) roots of prog metal in classic prog.
(Though I believe the two "prog" forms really bear little in common re history, attitude, or sound.)

I also love how Progmetal is being referred to as "a trend" in this thread and every fan is suspected of being "wrong" because of "following the trend".
Roots are crucial in understanding this kind of music, I agree with that, but isn't the progression throughout the year just as important if not more?

I wouldn't read too much into one post from one member, or the use of one particular word that can be interpreted in differing senses. (I also suspect that that person's mother tongue may not be English.)
Using only text to communicate with strangers can and does easily lead to many misunderstandings. For example, sarcasm, as in your opening "I also love how" does not come across clearly in type. A non-native English speaker could readily think that you really meant "love," instead of your (implied) "I am irritated by."

I'm not a HUGE fan of prog anymore at 21, but about a couple years ago it was my favorite genre. Lately, I've been into what most call Minimalism, Ambient, Avant Garde, Classical Electronica (or some nonsense like that), Glitch, etc, etc..... Basically, music influenced by FLUXUS, Classical, Jazz, and art-influenced Electronica (not that dance crap). :) I think Prog will eventually bleed into such artful music when it reaches it's next step. Maybe SW will help bring it to the next step with another release. I hope he is done with the Pop+Prog thing. Of course, for much lighter music, Prog (and any other type of music besides the garbage corporate BS like most Hip-POP, boring Rock, etc..) is always nice to play, even some more intelligent Pop sometimes (despite over-the-top production with waveforms being cut). :D

The tide may be "turning here (then again, "prog" might just be turning into metal), on a prog site, but I wonder if there's a shift/trend toward prog in youth as a whole? Somehow I doubt it, especially if we leave out the metal.
Every new generation seems to discover Floyd and Zeppelin, but classic Yes? Genesis? Gentle Giant? VDGG? Magma?
Just a gut feeling (but based on observation teaching in highschools & now college) -- no offense intended to you, Syzygy, or anyone!

Just a gut feeling (but based on observation teaching in highschools & now college) -- no offense intended to you, Syzygy, or anyone! |
There are so few young prog fans, actually
Keep in mind that this is an international forum, and by worldwide standards there's very few young prog fans. Especially in comparison to punk or hip hop. Prog is about as uncool as it gets, but the thing is that we(me at least) Don't give a sh*t in the least if we're the only prog fans 10 miles around. NO ONE in ,my school likes or even knows prog. Oh wait, I;ve seen a Yes and a Tool shirt once... over the course of five years. There's a lot of Pink Floyd fans around, but very few if any know other prog. The closest prog fan I know is King Of Siam(30 miles or so from my town).
And please quit blaming everything on metal.

Can I at least blame metal on metal, Miracle Whip?
Seriously though, don't you think the great majority of the 14 - 25 set came here via metal/prog metal? That's just what I think I see -- there was no prejudice toward the music intended. I think that (a large part of) what many of the younger members here call "prog," I (and many other older prog fans) would call metal.
In general, the two rock forms and their respective fans were almost diametrically opposed, when I was a young fellow....

I'd say 50/50. Most of the Velvet Crew are not the biggest metal fans. A couple are even stuck in the 70's Most close minded metal fans leave as newbies and don't make it far. I found this place via metal myself (searching for "Six Degrees...") but I didn't come here for metal only(I didn't even know much prog metal outside of DT).

Does this poll show prog-rock is becoming much more popular with young people? Or does it show that ages 15-20 have a lot of time on their hands and need to get lives? I wonder which, no offense, as I am in this group too.

same here. I'm fifteen and mom and dad's music defnitely turned me own to prog. mom's a big tull and tangerine dream fan, and dad loves all the old stuff (genesis, yes, king crimson, supertramp, rush, floyd). Out of those i only really listen to floyd and a little tangerine dream. Still a metalhead at heart though (Ive been listening to it since I was 7)

I could have written this... word by word, number by number. |
Thankfully we have the internet. I fear that without the internet, progressive rock would have died years ago. Even the heavy weights such as YES had to straddle the pop fence to reel a few more fans in. All we can hope is that those fans went back in time with their curiosities and discovered the music of the 70's. We need more young people not only listening to progressive rock, but the classics and jazz as well. It's so important for a healthy society to celebrate it's artists and allow free reign so as to have the most creative and thoughtful music at all times.

I don't know whether Ghost Rider counted me in the 5 but I am a woman too and between 45-50. So you could say for those who are new to the forum, that I was definitely "there" late 60's early 70's at the prog rock revolution. A wonderful time, musically, to be alive

I've noticed a lot of prog fans my age have been introduced to prog by
their parents, though it's not at all so with me. My dad introduced me
to The Beatles when I was 7, which started me out on the right track,
but I've made all the musical choices up until now. I started getting
realy into Yes when I was about 14, and havent looked back, getting
into stuff like Genesis, King Crimson, ELP...you guys know how it is.
I'm 16 now, by the way.

Loving whatever music isn't that age-related, it's more a media-thing with the kids, the sooner they emancipate themselves from formatted radio and charts-stuff the sooner they can get in touch with other kinds of music.
I have learned that young people are starving for good music and thankful if you introduce them to stuff they don't know...
apart from that: EVERY generation have their IGNORANTS !
41-aged

My theory is that the majority of progressive fans are -- in fact -- middle-aged, since they actually were around when most of the classic prog bands were making their music. However, I would hazzard to guess that many are (perhaps consequently) internet illiterate, and do not, then, frequent the archives.

Tastes in art, etc, tend to be fairly firmly set by middle age.) |
I would Like to add that a LOT of young progheads (such as me) got into prog by Pink Floyd. A whole lot of teenagers absolutely adore Pink Floyd and therefor attracts new audiences to prog rock.
