Just heard them for the first time on Planet Prog, curious to hear other peoples opinions - I thought they were quite good.
Everyone knows rock attained perfection in 1974, it's a scientific fact.

Good pop metal band, but only an average group (in terms of music in general). Their best album IMO s the last one. I don't know what this group is doing here in PA. Tarja's good look and voice was the cause of their sucess. But I hink Simone Simmons is hotter and sings better, although she doesn't have the same potence of Tarja.

ps: NIGHTWISH, RHAPSODY AND OTHER BANDS AREN'T PROG ROCK IN ANY WAY!
Bach, Ma, Bros, Déia, Dante.

Nightwish isn't very highly regarded here it seems. I happen to enjoy them. They've put out a string of solid albums from Oceanborn through Century Child, but Once is a masterpiece. The group kicked the vocalist out, so I don't see a bright future for them; at least they put out the aforementioned record first.

I like them a lot.  Quite happy they kicked out the prima-donna, her voice was generic.

They spawned a whole host of imitators.  I prefer the gothic metal/female voice + male rough singers.  Tristania for example, or Siebenburgen.

Would certainly agree they aren't prog at all.

I don't see why you see nothing prog in them at all. If the blending of opera and metal isn't prog enough (not that they've done it the best), at least Once can obtain credit for having material with unconventional arrangements, and a full orchestra & choir. Songs like "Creek Mary's Blood" and "Ghost Love Score" are brilliant, definitely prog, and the former is pretty experimental (especially for them). Up until Once, I would agree that all of their albums lacked variety.

I saw them live last year, they put on an excellent show. They did a Floyd cover of High hopes (or something like that) if I remember correctly.

I like Nightwish a lot, especially the first two albums (Angels Fall First and Oceanborn) . I think that allthough it's not the pinnacle of prog, they have their prog moments (e.g. Stargazers of Oceanborn) and Tarja was a fantastic singer. I love her voice. Also, Swanheart of Oceanborn is one of my fav. ballads of all time. In general I like very much the combination of operatic vocals with solid rock.

A friend of mine got me into them some time ago. I heard some songs from their previous albums and I have thier last album, Once. It's a very good album indeed and they released some good songs in their time.

For me Nightwish i s a good band, as posts aboves said, maybe the highest point of them is Tarja`s voice, but she isn`t there anymore, it could be bad for the band, but musically they are good, some dark metal, with some prog tones...

They're a fun band, but not prog. Tarja's vocals were certainly distinctive (for a band that plays metal) but not the cornerstone of the band - that would be Tuomas Holopainen. Although Tarja sings very well, sometimes the vocals detracted from the music. I suspect that they'll have another singer before long though:

100 % agreed , i once went to a concert of them, now that was a mistake Dead.Couldn't stand the mannerisms of Tarja Turunen who was continually shouting "come on" at the audience. i was back at the bar real soon that evening.

Although it's definitely not a prog rock band, I really like them a lot. They have quite a lot of good songs and Once is a great album. I saw them last year on tour and they were great, they even did a Pink Floyd cover with the song 'High Hopes (beautiful! Big smile). I like Once and Wishmaster best, but unfortunately, Wishmaster was stolen from my friend's car Unhappy They also stole his 'Dark Side of the Moon' (Pink Floyd) and 'Subsurface' (Threshold). Anyway (I'm going off-topic) try Once and Wishmaster and you won't be dissapointed!

That hardly shows adequate perseverence, at least not to form a lasting impression of the bands music. I'm only just beginning to like albums that I've had for years, so 1 listen hardly seems adequate. To me at least.

Perhaps you should try listening to the CDs, if you didn't like the mannerisms of the front-woman. I'm not saying that you will like them, but I'm getting an overall impression that a lot of people in this thread aren't giving Nightwish enough time before making some pretty harsh judgements.

For me the matter is simple: I cannot "connect" with Tarja. I know that she didn't write the music - she just "performed" with Nightwish. I agree that the music (particularly on Once) is not bad at all, but it leaves me cold.

I enjoy these much more:
- The Gathering
- Epica
- After Forever
