Zep wasn't anything special. Metal (which Zep is often given credit for inventing) was an offshoot of hard-rock, which was really an offshoot of garage rock. Ultimately, I don't think Zep deserves the attention it gets. It wasn't revolutionary and let's face it, the music was sappy. They were 'made for radio' hits.

Plus they were total self-indulgent pompous arrogant jerks. Pink Floyd apologized when they alienated fans. Led Zep was proud of it.
