Now... this poll may be a little bias due to this being a PROG forum
and all but... some people have some terrible misconceptions. Zeppelin
has nothing on Pink Floyd. Buttt... I wanted to see what you all
thought. And, I am aware that this poll probably exists somewhere on these forums but I am new so... |

Pink Floyd doesn't have a virtuoso for a drummer. Otherwise I enjoy Pink Floyd. Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd are both in my top ten or so favorite bands, so I can't vote accurately. Favorites depend on my mood and why I'm listening to music at any given time, interesting poll question though. Undecided. |

Zep is alright but, they are more of a dullard rock band. They had their moments, they had a great drummer, but they were trapped in their music. Pink Floyd was constantly progressing throughout the 60's and 70's. |

Let´s just compare both bands´ most representative and best songs: Stairway to heaven, Kashmir, No quarter.............mmhh, yeah, that´s it. Vs Set the controls to the heart of the sun, Let there be more light, Atom Heart mother, Echoes, Money, Any colour you like, Shine, wish you were here, Dogs, Comfortably numb, Run like hell, In the flesh, HIgh hopes. Pink Floyd beats Zeppelin also in creativity and feeling. |

IMO there are more Zep songs that are great, prog and serious (since it seems that you've written down the serious, prog ones.) But you can't judge Zeppelin as a prog band. I don't really think these two bands are comparable but if I had to chose one it would be Zeppelin. BTW, you should definitely add Achilles Last Stand to your list. Yes, there are many more great songs by Zeppelin. The main problem with them , is that they all seem to be a remake of "Whole Lotta Love", "Communication Breakdown" and "dazed and confused". Which are "one idea songs". Plain rock. I don´t mean classic, simplistic, repetitive plain rock is bad. Classic rock is meant to be listened in a different way. However...I would never try to find a reason why something like "Black dog" is better than "Shine on you crazy diamond". Would you?. Nevertheless, "Stairway to heaven" is an absolute masterpiece, something many many well regarded prog bands wish they had composed. Like Caravan, CAN, Magma, Focus, Ange, Ossana, Quatermass, etc.... |

Whoa, good if rather pointless poll!!! Difficult to compare and I like them both but today its Led Zeppellin because hey, no particular reason! I just feel that way. They are both great bands in their own right - very different mind - though as a live act its got to be Zep. Ironic perhaps that the more ambitious compositions were done by Pink Floyd, yet I think most people would say Zep had the better musicians in their line up. Jimmy Page is maybe no.1 in my list of guitarists. Great Zep tracks: Kashmir, In My Time of Dying, Rain Song, Whole Lotta Love, etc... (but personally if I never hear "Stairway to Heaven" I won't mind, its over-played...) Great Floyd tracks: Shine on, WYWH, Sheep, Time, Comfortably Numb, etc.... |

Zeppelin have nothing on Floyd, their music is bland for the most part and theyre painfully overrated already. Pink Floyd just needs a greater level of understanding to enjoy fully, and its stregnth is in its thoughtful composition, cutting lyrics etc. rather than impressive but quite superfluous drum solos or double necked guitar-work. I dont mind Led Zep but even the fourth album dosnt compare to any of Floyds work post Piper and pre Momentary lapse of reason. And the other Led Zep albums are barely worthy of mention! ------------- Bow before Rick Wright... For he is your God |

Zeppelin is "stairway to heaven", "Kashmir" and "No quarter" plus a bunch of songs that all sound as either "Rock and roll", "Black dog", "Dazed and confused" and "You shook me". It will always be easier to mention 15 some songs by Zeppelin because they last for only 4 minutes or less. Plus, Pink Floyd were much more diverse, created a much wider range of styles, concepts, sounds, moods and textures. They also presented way better songwriting than Zeppelin. I really don´t care about Zeppelin´s drumming if it is presented in such a narrow variety of styles. Also, what do you think about Zeppelin´s closest attempt (apart from "Stairway" and "Kashmir" which were succesful attempts) at prog with "Carouselambra" from the album "In through the aout dooor"??....Oh man ¡¡...what a patetic piece of music. What is that cheesy keybord repeating all around the song?. They even managed to make it last for as long as 10:34 minutes. HAHAHA ¡¡. that keyboard reminds me of a video game after making enough points for a "bonus life". Anyway... I really don´t understand the result of this poll. Pink Floyd has some albums among the first 10 places in the overall prog list. When compared against other band they usually win. But one day a simplistic-one idea-per song-conventional rock-band comes and kicks their butt.... |

There is NO COMPARISON between Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. I'm a
HUGE Floyd fan and I can still say Zeppelin wins all day long and for
every reason. Pink Floyd's songwriting isn't more creative or
complex than Led Zeppelin, it's actually more simplistic. Page vs. Gilmour: PAGE's classic riffs and awesome solos CANNOT BE TOUCHED BY Gilmour, the emotion in his solos are much more moving and ooze with feeling. Page is the most soulful guitarist ever and although Gilmour is great too he doesn't come close. Plant vs. Waters and Gimour: this is an area that is comparable in quality although not substantially. Pink Floyd has some GREAT vocals like 'Echoes' but Robert Plant is much more energetic, passionate, moving, and soulful. Jon Paul Jones vs. Roger Waters: Jon Paul Jones is one of the best bassists ever, his bass lines are so active and add so much to the music. I don't think I've ever heard any bass playing even worth mentioning from Waters. Jon Paul Jones vs. Richard Wright Jon Paul Jones is a BETTER keyboard and piano player than Wright, just listen to the extended piano solo in the bootleg DESTROYER and you will agree. He is also a better songwriter than Richard Wright John Bonham vs. Nick Mason: Best rock and roll drummer of all time compared to one of the worst. Led Zeppelin's music is actually more creative and diverse than Pink Floyd's music in my opinion. They had moving soulful blues songs like Ten Years Gone. Pseudo-metal in Achilles Last Stand. Progressive rock with No Quarter and Carouselambra, and moving love songs like Babe I'm Gonna Leave you, and Since i've been loving you. I don't think it's possible to be moved by a Pink Floyd song but Led Zeppelin is SOO MOVING and their music is much more effective in conveying emotions, which is what rock is ALL ABOUT! In general each Led Zeppelin song conveys a completely different sound and Pink Floyd's sound is mostly homogeous. |

i disagree. Led zeppelin progressed from album to album. Led zeppelin I was bluesy- then they went to more hard rock in Led Zeppelin II -then they went folky in Led zeppelin III and so on and so forth. i do however like Pink floyd more though. I agree that pink floyd progressed more then Led zeppelin. But zeppelin defenatly did progress. I love them both but floyd gets my vote. ------------- true as a lobster in a pteredaktyl's underpants.

glory of these two bands is that they're the two best from the 70s and yet you can love them both unconditionally because they're so different. PA forumers throw around the phrase 'too different to compare' a lot, but this time it is appropriate. If you prefer one of them fine, but they can't possibly be juxaposed in a hope to determine a better. |

Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd may sound completely different, but Zeppelin is just more fun to listen to, no matter the mood or setting. I suppose there would be some situations in which you'd rather be listening to PF, but... for the most part, I know I'd rather be listening to Black Dog or Rock n Roll or the Immigrant song... or anything else by Zep I suppose... its all really good! Ha, I usually get annoyed that people go on and on about how influencial they are and how original their music is... and they did do a fair amount of 'ripping off' other artists... but I just like the way Zeppelin does it! Ah I love watching the live DVDs too... forget what theyre called... anyone know what Im talkin about? That DVD set with the rock formation on the front.... and.. the thingy... Well whatever, all I know is, if I ever manage to get myself a car, I'm gonna be the only guy drivin down the road blastin 'Rock n Roll' outta my speakers instead of some giant mess of crap by 50 cent... or Lloyd Banks... or 'The Game' or some other filthy rich idiot who got shot in his pinky finger and some other non-vital body part and owns a multi million dollar record empire for that reason alone... |

Wow this is hard! -- Both are incredibley talented and original and crucial to the evolution of music. I think it comes down to what I'm in the mood to listen to more, and that would probably be LED ZEPPELIN. I think they satisfy a wider range of styles and moods than Floyd. Zeppelin can have so straight up rockers, long bluesy jams, and even some progressive trips (i.e. No Quarter). I feel like I listened to Floyd more when I'm chilled out or in a prog mood (which is alot tho). Even tho it's impossible for me to decide, I'm gonna throw my vote to Led Zeppelin. ------------- Strangers passing in the street by chance two separate glances meet and I am you and what I see is me. 123 Individually, every member of Zep is a better musician than any member of Floyd. Also, their songs are better and more diverse. Pink Floyd is THE over-rated prog band. Led Zeppelin wrote what is widely excepted as the greatest rock song ever. With Floyd, it's the same droning, depressing song over and over again. I really don't see any complexity in any of their music...sure, they do concept albums, but it's like the same song for 50 minutes! Floyd & Zep cant really be compared. Floyd are pure prog and Zep are just superb rock with occasional prog leanings. Both are 'awsome' bands in their own right IMO. When Zep do prog out (Rain Song, No Quater, Achilles Last Stand etc) they are mindblowing! Sorry, but I cant vote for one over the other..

Marginally Pink Floyd. I enjoy their music slightly better - especially Echoes through my HD600s in a dark room. Very high feel good factor. Both bands have a place in my history as they were the first real bands I listened to in the 70's |

David Gilmour is the best musician in Floyd and he is not exactly ground breaking. The guy rarely leaves the pentatonic scales. So as far as musicianship, Zeppelin by a LONG mile. As far as which one I enjoy listening to more, well that changes with my very whimsical fancy. Gotta go with Zeppelin just out of ability to actually play. |

or ever hahahahhah. They weren't prog... they were sure as heck influenced by it but have NEVER seen a reference to Zeppelin being a prog group.
They were about selling albums, filling stadiums, and getting
rich... prog is about merging art and music. The closest Zeppelin got
to art was writing the book on 1001 ways to defile a groupie (which is
a art though hahahha) They did incorporate prog elements in their
music... that's a long way from being a prog group. Consider me

EDIT: I saw someone else already commented on what I was going to say. FOCUS: I would say that overall, Zeppelin is better since they have had a greater influence on later bands over Floyd, and are generally well-received with most audiences. I am not a fan of Floyd at all, but that has nothing to do with my outlook. ------------- Can you tell me where my country lies? |

this poll doesnt belong on a prog forum cause everyone is naturally gonna pick floyd i voted zepplin their lyrics arent as goods as floyds but gilmour has nothing on mr. page, and then when u add johnny boy on drums there is no comparison to me dont get me wrong i love floyd to death but they dont match up to zep for me and plus has anyone ever asked you if you've "gotten the floyd out?" ------------- When the world is sick Can't no one be well But I dreamt we were all beautiful and strong

Pink Floyd, EASILY. It's not like I don't like Led Zeppelin (I do), but Pink Floyd are much more interesting and they got me introduced to prog (along with many others), so I have to vote for them.

The Pink Floyd of course... Zeppelin are probably the masters of heavy rock,

| I voted for Pink Floyd. I used to love Zeppelin and I can remember biking up to the local, independent, record store to get each new release. But over the course of time, Floyd has stood up better for me. That early Zeppelin stuff off the first several albums though, just can't be beat and I think when it comes to the 1970s you picked the two major acts. cha-ching, cha-ching. |

Pink Floyd is head and shoulders above Zep.
I used to be a HUUUUUUGE Zep fan (when i first really got into music)
Looking at them now, Ive never heard a band that has such a huge difference between their great songs and bad songs, and nothing in between.
If I'm not listening to Zeps 20 best (and most popular/radioplayed songs).....Im not listening to Zep.

 much....The musicianship in both are great though(zep moreso in fact.) |
